... team this year on ESPNU's draft special last night. Said lavin loves this team and that he expects big things from this group. He talked up Harrison, Sampson, Obekpa and Sanchez... just good to see us finally being discussed on these type of shows... God Bless u coach!!

LaPhonso is his name. Played at ND. Now ESPN analyst.

Thank u... yeah, it was a segment with Ellis and a former college coach(???) discussing the upcoming college season. He said he liked SJU as well but picked Virginia for his surprise pick. Both picked the ACC as best conference.

Think it was Dino Gaudio.

I really like LaPhonso. No surprise to me. He's always been a fan of the Johnnies. This team is loaded and should compete for the top spot in the Big East. And why not?

I saw quite a few of Virginia's games last year to say that if we face them next year, we will beat them.

So did I. It probably would be a close game, also depending on where it's played.

We are not scheduled to play UVa, so if we did, it would be at a neutral site; i.e. NCAA Tournament. They had similar problems scoring last year as we did, and will not be nearly as athletic. They beat us at JPJ in the NIT during Harrison's suspension.

I appreciate his support but I cannot stand him as an analyst/announcer.

I would be disappointed if we could not beat them handily next season. They will be slightly inside the bubble with a ceiling not too far from that. Everyone will be a year older, we get our best player, Harrison, back, add a top 25 PG, bring back a 5th-year senior at center, a healthy Greeene and Branch, and add a dynamic, skilled senior big man in Sanchez.

They won 23 games last year, and return virtually the entire team - of which 5 of the top 9 were frosh, and one a Soph. Their ? is at PG, were Jontel Evnas (4 pts 4.8 assists) has graduated. Both of their incoming frosh are PGs. Both had multiple high D-1 offers. Devon Hall is a big PG at 6'5, London Parrantes is a very quick pg at 6'1. If either is close to ready, the UVA prediction is valid. WIth Tony Bennett as coach, they won't be flashy, maybe not even exciting, but I ASSURE you all of those underclassmen will be MUCH better - players improve under Bennett. Didja know Klay Thompson was an UNRANKED recruit when Bennett got him? :)

Little recognized fact - Coach Bennett is one of the top 5 outside shooters in college hoops history - for his 4 years of D-1 ball, 290 for 584 - 49.7% - that's #1 all time in D-1.. He was 55% inside the arc, and 85% from the line. He also averaged over 5 assists each of his 4 years. That wasn't in limited shots, either. He was the teams leading scorer all 4 years, with a high of 21.5 per game, and a career average of 19.4.

Heckuva coaching family tradition - Dad Dick was HC at Wisc-Stevens Point, Wisconsin Green Bay, Wisconsin, and Washington state. His Uncle Jack took over at Stevens point when Dick moved on, and won two D-3 National Championships in 2004 and 2005. His sister Kathi is former women's head coach at Indiana, and currently head coach at Northern Illinois.

I think it would be a very close game if we meet. But I like our chances because I think our frosh PG is gonna be way better than their frosh PG. :)

Also a 12 pt 7 reb guy for his 11 year NBA Career.

Thanks cr... pretty sure SJU played Notre Dame with LaPhonso back in 89 or 90(??) at their place. Remember watchin' the game on nbc while I was in Vermont on a ski trip... think we won but not sure... great college player, pretty good pro and a decent commentator.

I said it at the end of last season and I'll say it again. If the team improves its shooting, it will be extraordinarily dangerous. Between Sampson, Obekpa, Sanchez, and God's Gift, the post player will be very good. And I expect Dom to keep improving and become a force on the wing. But you need Harrison, Greene, Branch, Jordan, and Hooper to keep the defenses honest.

I'm not saying you are going to shoot 35-40% from the outside. But you need to hit your open shots to stop defenses from collapsing in the middle on you.

To reiterate what you're talking about as far as talent on ESPN today Goodman lists the 10 teams with the most NBA prospects and its the usual suspects plus Oklahoma St primarily due to Marcus Smart.

St Johns is listed amongst a dozen that "nearly cracked the list"
