Lapchick Lunch / October 6

Maybe they will announce the site for the Lapchick Statue >

Beat me to the punch, Matt. Would be the perfect time/place to put an end to all this nonsense and finally -- finally!!! -- give Coach Lapchick the honor he so richly deserves.

In the interim, I think we should all email AD Goff and President Gempesaw about getting this thing done without further delay.

Good luck dealing with AD Goof and President Forrest Gumpesaw regarding this issue. :(

I'm not missing the days of Father Egghead. These guys are far better than what we've had around here for a long time.

My snide comment on the spirit rock video might have given us an answer on the Joe Lapchick statue.

I've heard the scuttlebutt about placing the statue. I really would have liked to see it in the CA lobby, or just outside the arena. We know that someday hopefully in the distant future there will be a Coach Carnesecca statue, and they should be bookends. With so few fans ever passing Taffner on the way to/from games, it's a big mistake IMO to place it there.

Thanks for update...

Nice to see it going up, but agree w/ Beast that the location is a mistake and will not be seen. Near CA makes most sense and ideally w/ a like statue of Carnesecca (still wondering who owns the Louie statue Goff posed with a few months ago at a conference)

Hopefully maybe some students can move it to a more prominent place as part of some college hijinks. Putting it in one of the men's room inside Carnesecca would be a better idea than the current plans. Only at St. John's kids, only at St. John's! :(

I was part of that culture as a student. :)

Seriously though. One thing that could be impactful to students as a whole, and to prospective recruits specifically, is this long standing an deep tradition at the high levels of NCAA basketball success. I'm sure most students have no clue as to Joe Lapchick, and little idea who Lou Carnesecca is. To place a statue in a less than prominent place on campus devalues Joe Lapchick's contribution to the prominence of SJU in our community and city. If we don't fully honor our traditions, what can we really sell to prospects. Joe Lapchick might have had CA named after him. Not that Looie isn't the right choice, because he has meant so much for so long and in so many ways to SJU and to us. But Lapchick is far from just another guy, and I don't think even Bobby G. realizes that. Joe Lapchick was one of those great players who elevated basketball away from the days of short white guys pushing 2 handed set shots, and helped transform the game. Joe Lapchick the coach helped take college basketball from smoke filled auditoriums to packed MSG battles when SJU and NYC became the epicenter of college basketball. Then you add how Coach Lapchick helped break down racial barriers, was the precursor of the Holzman coached championship Knicks, and you realize this guy's status maybe belongs at the front gate and not tucked away in a corner of the school near the student athletic center.

Somehow room has to made in the area where you have entered CA and are about to present your ticket to enter the main arena. Even if this means the removal of trophies, pictures etc. Lapchick as has been pointed out is too important a SJU figure to be put anywhere else. Ticket holders do not meet outside CA in the winter.
