Among Those Being Honored Will Be:

Former Iowa, Washington State and USC Coach, George Raveling

AP National College Basketball Writer Jimmy O'Connell, SJU '75

Don Haskins, The Legendary Texas Western (UTEP) coach

And Last but ceratinly not least,

3 Time All-American and HOF Coach,Theresa Grentz

Coach Carnesecca and Coach Kaiser will be there as well as the entire Lapchick family.

If you work in NYC it will be a lunch hour well spent !

Was at the luncheon today.

Great crowd. Easily over 300 people attended. Hopefully we can get some guys from Redmen to attend next year's celebration.

Joe Lapchick Jr. was there for the first time. He is a West Point grad and was captain of Army's football team back in the day.

Barbara Lapchick just turned 80 and doesn't look anywhere near her age. Then again she was an original Ford model in NYC.

Needless to say, St. John's alumnus and world renown professor Richard Lapchick joined his siblings at The NYAC.

Saw The Maven (St. John's Class of 1975) as well as the legendary "Garf" of 5 star Fame.

Coaches "In the house" included Nick Macharchick of Hofstra, Fordham's Tom Pecora and HOFer Jim Calhoun.

Representing St. John's was Coaches Carnesecca and Kaiser, Coach Keady, Mel Davis, Billy Schaefer and Gus Alfieri

HOFer Nate "Tiny" Archibald (who played for Don Haskins at UTEP/Texas Western), gave one of the best speeches I ever heard.

For our younger posters he is the only player to lead The NBA in scoring AND assists in the same season.

"Tiny" said Bob Cousey was instrumental in his being drafted. Said he weighed 145 pounds soaking wet when he played. When Haskins was asked how is a guy who weighs 145 pounds going to guard anyone in the NBA, Coach Haskins responded "Who's going to guard him!!"

Coach George Raveling was also amazing. A man to be admired, respected and emulated. A first class individual in every way.

Another member of The Class of 1975, Jimmy O'Connel received an award for his life's work covering basketball for The AP.

Can't sing OC's praises loud enough. He is the quintessential "St. John's man". Very proud to be considered a friend of his. No one better. Will not find a nicer person.

For the basketball junkie this is a MUST attend event.

Can buy everything you said but I am not so sure about George Raveling. are you basing your assessment on how he presented himself that evening or do you know him well? Just curious.

Lapchick Awards Luncheon was great. Lou and Jack Kaiser gave great intros for
O'C and Teresa Grentz, Coach Haskins son gave a heartfelt talk about his dad, and George Raveling
was very humble and appreciative of being honored. One thing that all four honorees talked about and
recognized : their mentors. Younsters these days are not being exposed to great mentors.

Look forward to the next few years as a lot of fine coaches have retired and will be receiving The
Lapchick Awards !

George Raveling is an all-world guy who did everything a person could do in and for college basketball; and, he did it with class. He and I are contemporaries and I can remember him giving us "the business" when he played for Villanova in the 50's. I don't remember if he made it to the list but he was an All American player and one of the cleanest players and sportsmen in the game. He went on to coach at Villanova and in the ACC as an assistant and later moved to the left coast to head coach in Wa. and USC where he had a fine record.
Had he coached in the East, the center of basketball in his salad days, his name would be on everyone's tongue and maybe in the HOF.
He had an odd connection with history as MLK's personal, volunteer body guard on the day that Martin delivered his most famous speech. At the end of "I Had a Dream" , George was handed the original script by Martin; I don't know if he still has it but he owned it for years. He is the kind of impressive guy you would entrust important things to without hesitation to.
He has always been one of my all time favorite competitors at SJU and one reason I root for Villanova when we are not playing them\.
He was a sports caster on national tv for years and he was a friend and nice guy to everyone. He's one guy who never had an enemy.
