Lapchick Character Award Lunch Nov. 15

Was at the lunch on Thursday at The NYAC. Event was excellent.

2012 Honoree's included:

The late Pete Newell, Morgan Wootten, Cathy Rush (coach of the Immaculata Mighty Macs), and C.M. Newton.

Among those who attended were: 1960 Olympian Darall Imhof, who played for Coach Newell at Cal.

He was also part of a national championship team for the Bears and an All-American.

In addition was a #1 draft pick of the Knicks.

Under the category of how things have changed: Didn't receive a scholarship until his second year in college.

His 1960 Gold Medal Olympic team included some guys named Oscar and Jerry

That team also, coincidently, had the exact same margin of victory as did the original Dream Team.

Jack Powers, the former Manhattan coach and AD introduced C.M. Newton who could not attend due to a sinus condition.

Powers mentioned that he was recruited by St. John's out of Manhattan Prep.

For those not aware, C.M. coached at Alabama and Vanderbilt and was AD at Kentucky (he was the fellow who convinced Rick Pitino to come to Lexington).

C.M. was also a member of the 1952 UK National Championship team.

Theresa Grentz, a player for Mrs. Rush (as she was called by her players) and the former coach at Rutgers was an excellent speaker and shared some funny stories.

Amamzing how Immaculata had no budget, no gym and no bus yet won 3 national championships.

Did help that they had Grentz (who passed on going to Maryland due to family circumstances in order to stay closer to home).

Mrs. Rush described Grentz to her husband (NBA ref Ed Rush) as Jerry West in a woman's body.

James J.B. Brown of CBS Sports introduced his former coach Morgan Wootten.

DeMatha had a huge turnout of former players to honor Coach Wootten, including ND Coach Mike Brey.

J.B. also mentioned how Billy Schaefer had 30 points when the Harvard freshman played the St. John's frosh back in 1969. Freshman couldn't play varsity back in the day, as we know.

Harvard and St. John's were the #1 and #2 freshman teams in the country at the time and St. John's won the game at what was then called Alumni Hall.

J.B. also recognized Mel Davis, who also played in that game, as the best player in the country as a high school senior.

Kevin Joyce, the former South Carolina All-American and Olympian, was also at the event.

Richie Lapchick and his family made the trip up Florida.

Gus Alfieri also had several inspirational stories about playing for Coach Lapchick and what a great person he was.

Morgan Wootten mentioned that he had lunch with Coach Lapchick and Coach Carnesecca back in the late 1950's and that Coach Lapchick gave him a bit of advice that he said was one of the most important things he was ever told in his life:

Coach lLapchick told him that the young men he was coaching, 30, 40, 50 years down the road would forgetr the names of their classmates and teammates, but that the would never forget the name of their coach.

St. John's alumnus, Bob Livingston, who has been the driving force behind the Lapchick Character Awards was the MC.
