Ladies Lose to Butler 55-50

Tough loss. Butler came into the game with a 6-9 record
Handford was outstanding, as usual, scoring 25 points
Grant was ejected for two T's - shot 2 for 13 and only had 6 points

The 2nd T was unreal - Grant was going out of bounds in possession of the ball and tried to hit it off an opposing player - a play that you see all the time. The ref claimed Grant was intentionally trying to throw the ball at a Butler player and T'd her up. The announcers (and I) were shocked by the call.

We were coming back and cut the lead to 1 late in the game when Simmons went out to try to block a 3 point shot and banged into a Butler playing setting a pick for the shooter. The 3 point shot went in and the ref called a foul on Simmons for running into the screener. Butler was in a 1 and 1 situation and hit both FT's to make it a 5 point play that sealed the game.

This game showed our lack of depth. Dunn and Simmons did absolutely nothing replacing Grant. Our bench did not produce a single point. We are 5 deep and that's it. Our free throw shooting remains a liability and our half court offense is not very good. We are much better creating shots in the open court off rebounds and turnovers. Sounds a lot like the men's team, doesn't it?

An interesting aside - Damon Bailey - the guy that Bobby Knight recruited in the 8th grade and played 4 years at IU, is an assistant coach of the Butler's women's team. He is a childhood buddy of their new head coach.

Sorry for the rant and length of this post. Between the men's and women's games this week, I am a very frustrated Johnnies fan. But, as always, I will be cheering them on every time either team steps on the floor, just as I have for nearly 50 years.

Thank you for the nice read. Would have been nice to have won.

Watched the game. Good summary. They play offense 4 on 5 as lewis doesn't even look at the basket. No bench at all.

A bad loss that should never have occurred, no ifs ands or buts about it. Unfortunately it will be very hard to win if any of our big three , being Handford, Grant or Amber get tossed or foul out.
It is huge for this team that 6 2 junior Sandra Odobi had surgery and has yet to play this season and I am not sure if she will.
Unfortunately our four lady heralded recruiting class has yet to catch fire and that is a surprise and concern. If the bench fails to produce it will be hard for us to go far. The one thing I do know is that the player development has been great under this staff in the past so I am just hoping it will start sooner than later.
We must make this game up.

Aubie, I agree that player development has been a staff strength in the past
However, the starters play almost the entire game and the subs hardly play
When the subs do play, they look like deer in headlights
They are not ready to contribute at all at this point of the season
Btw. only 1 frosh (Simmons) played. The only other sub (Dunn) is a graduate student

Maybe we shouldn't be on prime TV as we're 0-3. ;)

As far as the Grant T, her first was because of what she said to the ref. You have to know they are going to be watching her with eagle eyes and anything she said or did was going to be viewed in that context. You could tell from her demeanor on the court that she was frustrated/upset with the way her game was going. I think she just lost it and that's why she picked up the two quick Ts

Maybe Coach T should have sat her longer after she picked up the first one, he got her back in the game real quick and we all saw what happened.

Yes, Grant was having a rough night and was not playing well. And, yes, she mouthed off to the ref on the first T and (without hearing what she said) probably deserved it. But, on the 2nd T, even the announcers were in disbelief. As she was heading out of bounds with the ball in her hands, she was trying to bounce the ball off an opponent to gain possession for her team. This is something that is frequently done. If you saw the play, there is no way in the world that she was trying to throw the ball with the intent of injuring a player on the other team. The refs are supposed to be professionals and, as such, should not have been "watching her with eagle eyes" because of the first T. Grant made a mistake the first time and paid for it. Case closed. The second T was pure BS!!

I watched the game. The ref that Ted her up the second time was not the same one who called the first one. In an ideal world that second one shouldn't have been called. In the real world it was and part of the reason may have been because after the first one the refs weren't going to cut her any slack, at least not so soon after the first one.
