SJU press release
.(Nov. 30, 2017) – In an effort to honor the legacy of those key individuals who helped shape St. John’s Basketball into what it is today, the University will unveil a statue in memory of legendary head coach Joe Lapchick, recognizing his outstanding contributions to the program over the course of three decades.
The unveiling will take place on Saturday, Dec. 2, before the Red Storm’s game against Sacred Heart at Carnesecca Arena. The private ceremony will begin at 2:30 p.m. outside Taffner Field House. During halftime of the Johnnies’ contest against the Pioneers, there will be an on-court recognition of Coach Lapchick, the 1943 and 1944 National Invitation Tournament Championship teams and all his former players.
The head coach of the St. John’s men’s basketball team in non-consecutive stints from 1936-47 and 1956-65, Lapchick led the Redmen to four NIT titles in 1943, 1944, 1959 and 1965 during a time when the NIT rivaled its counterpart, the NCAA Tournament, in reputation and prestige. In his time away from St. John’s, Lapchick served as the head coach of the New York Knicks from1947-56, leading the team to three appearances in the NBA Finals.
In 20 seasons at the helm of the Johnnies, Lapchick won 334 games and compiled a .720 winning percentage overall.
A two-time Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame inductee, Lapchick was first enshrined as a member of the Original Celtics in 1959. Seven years later, he was honored again in Springfield as an individual, celebrating the impact of his legacy as the game’s first truly agile big man.
