Knicks legend, SJU assistant coach Willis Reed dies at 80

Heartbreaking news during a time of so much joy
was a big Laker fan at the time, with West, Baylor and Wilt. Willis was the essence of class, commitment and willfulness.

True NY Legend, RIP

When Lou had is banner hung at the Garden, it was Willis who introduced him and stood by his side at center court.

Willis always credited Lou with giving him a job after he retired and an entry into the coaching ranks.

I met Willis once, it was during the 1994 Final Four here in Charlotte. The Sunday between games there was a senior all star game and at halftime I was walking around and saw him. No crowd around him and no one appeared to know who he was. I went up and asked him if he could sign my program to my nephew. He was very curt and said "I will write my name and you write whatever you want". I thanked him and said I appreciated all he did having grown up a big Knicks fan and he said "You never saw me play". I responded that I surely did but was not at game 7. At this point I think he realized he had been a little unfriendly and asked me my name and shook my hand. As he searched for the words to say to me for how well I handled our exchange, he looked me in the eye and said, " Mike, you would make a great used car salesman". I swear he meant it as a compliment, so I got that going for me. RIP Captain.

RIP to an all-time great NY icon.

Favorite Knick of all time. His battles with Wes Unseld especially rebounding were legendary. Never forget the Bullet playoff game where Willis went for 36 points and 36 rebounds. RIP Captain

Godspeed Captain.

Many years ago I was playing an a High School game and Willis was at the game. I remember him in the bleachers having to fold his legs like an accordion. The people treated him with reverence. Basketball royalty in NY.
