Kiss my Cooley!

There was a great crowd today at the Garden for the worst team in the Big East and that is a good sign of things to come once this staff gets real players. That was about the only positive to take away from today's game against the Providence Friars.  They had a better coached team with NBA quality players. They deserve an NCAA bid.   Ed Cooley is one of the better coaches in the Big East and it was evident in the time outs when I rewatched the game.  Cooley spoke about specific things he wanted to see while Mullin was a cheerleader saying insightful things like "play hard" and "Don't get discouraged".  Mullin has made Steve Lavin look like a Nobel laureate when communicating to his players. Perhaps, as bad as our players are, the  reason they commit the same errors right after the time out is because they are told absolutely nothing strategy-wise and are just given a pep talk.
Case has been made that we need talented lead guards like Ponds and Lovett because Mussini and Ellison will be spectators next year.
The French and Italian connection was a failure. Along with Ron M, Mussini and Alibegovic were major disappointments.  By the end of the season Mussini looked totally lost on both ends of the court. Even when used off the ball as in today's Friars game, he was insignificant while on the court.  A six foot nothing wandering the perimeter aimlessly, his teammates not even looking to get him the ball. My gut tells me he may not renew his student visa.
As I have been saying all year, this team needs new blood as there is little to build on next year with four freshmen and only two who are Big East worthy. The future should be bright because the most important pieces have already been recruited in Ponds, Lovett and Ahmed. Now a 5th year transfer and another stud are imperative. Options on scholarship renewal are on the table and should be taken advantage of in the next few weeks. A whole new starting five next year but it will be talented going 8-9 deep. Not enough to be top 5 in the conference but good enough for 6th in my view.

Nice post 72 and agree with your assessment of talent level for next season but with coaching staff as currently constituted 6th might be tough.

I think we will add two more very good players for next year because the lineup is up for grabs and any new players will have an opportunity for immediate playing time or starting. The staff is under pressure to upgrade the talent and as you see they are pursuing everyone who is talented and uncommitted.
As for the staff, unless Greg leaves for the NBA, I don't see any changes. The key will be how much has Chris Mullin learned this year that will serve him in the coming years. I know we have been hard on Chris but this is NYC and the honeymoon is a short one but with real talent we will eventually become very competitive in the Big East. BTW, should Greg leave it would be wise for Chris to reach out to a veteran coach like Tim Welsh who has been down the same road as Chris and who was a decent head coach who was an assistant under some of the best.

Welsh interesting since Mullin can be his designated driver but I was thinking maybe Pete Gillen type

Was also thinking of Gillen, quick wit and great sense of humor but there is appears to already be too much joking around. Also was thinking of possibly Bucky Lappas.

Pete has been out of coaching a very long time and is going on 69 years but they both have experience with Don Nelson so it could work. I am hoping Chris, St. Jean and Slice get on the same page over the summer rather than having individual scripts as they seem to have now. As much as we can criticize our inexperienced staff, the player composition was the worst I have ever seen at St. John's. Once Obekpa left we had a huge hole in the middle that was exploited almost every game and when Lovett was declared ineligible we had absolute zero at the point that was also exploited all year long. Even without Obekpa, the absence of Lovett and Williams likely lost us 4 or 5 games. Winning 12 or 13 games would have drawn less attention to Mullin and the general lack of experience even with scrubs like Balamou, Jones and Alibegovic getting record playing time. Bottom line is none of our freshmen should have had to play more than 10 minutes per game but future NBA flops like Obekpa and Jordan deserted St. John's to serve their own selfish interests. We have hit rock bottom and the only way to go is up. The next couple of players we sign will determine if up is to 9th or 6th.

Btw, 6th may be good enough for an NCAA bid next year.
