kentucky roulette

This Calipari and Kentucky recruit roulette has to be hair raising. On Thursday 5 to 7 players announce their gone to the NBA and at the same time 5 to 7 18 year olds are getting Carte Blanche at Nike Hoop Summit and the Jordan Game (both events owned by his shoe sponsor so you know they're getting minute by minute updates and help from Nike people). All 5 could announce together at one of these events creating a giant media happening worth millions to Nike in marketing impressions. What a racket he has going.

It's feast or famine. The kids hit it off, dreams merge and its right back to the final. They don't and its a one-way ticket to the edge of the Top 25.

What a crazy, scummy way to run a program. His reign will not end well.

Tell his bankbook that . His reign has been long and most profitable for him and the players that moved on to the NBA

You have to hand it to him. He figured this sport out like no other coach and will take it to the HOF

It's all about the money

I am really tired and disgusted at how Kentucky and other similar schools have screwed up college basketball with the number of one and dones they routinely bring to their program. How about a school loses a scholarship for every kid that leaves early and does not transfer to another school and continue to graduation?

Why?
That kid should have a right make money professionally. There shouldn't be a penalty for leaving early.
It's a joke that the NBA won't draft them right out of high school.

Calipari, at a school like Kentucky, just does it better than anyone else.

I actually wished kids had to stay 2 years but if teams make a living on one and cones then I'm not going to argue too much because when a team like Wisconsin comes along I enjoy them a little more.

On a separate note am I the only one who wants the shot clock shortened ? I really want that reduced

Agree

Agree on both points. The one and dones are ruining college basketball. The rich get richer. Could we possibly ever recruit 15-20 super blue chip players over 4 years the way Kentucky does? Who can? A handful of elite programs can even hope to win a national championship under the current system.

A 35 second shot clock is a joke. Teams stand around for 20 seconds to even get serious about starting their set.

I'd like it shortened to a 30 second shot clock.

30 for starters & move out three point line a bit.

There would be no penalty for the player (student-athlete). School would lose a scholarship if he left.

Agree. Move the three-point line to a distance similar to international distance.

Why not mirror the NBA game? 4 qtrs, etc.

I think one and dones should do their developing in a D-League payed for by the NBA, and they should be payed a minimal salary to force them to make the NBA after a year or move on. Colleges and Universities should be for student athletes. If after their second year they are good enough for the next level then I don't think the school should be penalized if that student leaves.

You would think with all the one and dones that Kentucky would start losing scholarships because of a poor APR rating.

as one mentioned earlier (apologies for not remembering the poster by name, or even which thread--this board is hoppin' crazy these days)...

we're the only nation in the world that ties education/athletics the way we do.

As long as that is the case, this stuff will continue. And why not? It's anti-american to tell an 18 year old they can't make money in this country doing something they excel at. Which is why most will shrug if the power-5 just altogether stop pretending that football/basketball is about "student athletes."

Personally, I kind of like the rules in college baseball the best. If a kid has the goods to be drafted out of HS, I don't think it should be mandated that he goes to college. They don't want to be there and let's be honest, players like Towns and Okafor aren't doing themselves any good by (a) sacrificing a year of salary (b) risking injury to themselves.

However, if you have no draft prospects out of HS and decide to enroll in college, you need to be 2 years removed from HS.

Complained to my wife about the problem of one and dones in college basketball. She said I don't hear her complaining about me being a one and done sexual partner. So I shut up and slinked away. :(
