Keady & Whitesell

Can someone please explain what Keady and Whitesell actually do? because after this season i have seen no improvement of the coaching (Keady's job) nor Xs and Os (Whitesell's job)

Keady, while respect his accomplishments, is a waste of a spot on the bench.

There's not a 16, 17 or 18 year old recruit who knows who this guy is and screaming out HOF credentials holds no weight if they never heard of him. Same goes for mentions of John Wooden. No one knows and no one cares.

Whitesell, I don't know what his role is. All I know is that he's passionate by his sidelines demeanor. I respect that.

His role in practices and player development is a mystery to me.

And forget Darrick Martin. This UCLA East pipe dream is doing more harm than good.

Keady isn't a "coach." He is an advisor. He takes notes and helps Lavin with suggestions during practice. Whitesell seems very engaged during games. He is the lead assistant. Since he came in late, I give him a pass on how much we should have expected this year. Darrick Martin is DOBO.

Hopefully, next season Whitesell can help Lavin put in place an effective offensive scheme from day1.

Serious question.
Did we ever score on an out of bounds play under our own basket this year?
Even 1 layup?

No, but we give up a lot under opponent's hoop.

These two posts give a very accurate summary of non existent offensive set nor defensive schemes strategies. COUPLED TOGETHER, this is under the broad banner of Coaching 101.
Lavin needs to repeat those Principles Courses this summer since he gets a failing grade in the 2013-14 semesters.

I cringed every time the other team had the ball out of bounds under their hoop.

I was observing Whitesell last night, and it left me wondering the same thing, what exactly does he do? He looks very passionate out there, he comes off professional and determined and yells commands at times, but what exactly is he commanding? There is no offensive gameplan to be seen.

Keady is not a waste of a spot, because he isn't a spot. I would think after all you've posted you'd at least have the basic knowledge that Keady is not an assistant, doesn't replace an assistant, and is in the special role as advisor. As for your comment about Wooden, any player or fan, or Redmen.com poster who doesn't know or care about Wooden's accomplishments is about as ignorant as it comes about college basketball. Jack WIlliams is presumably our youngest poster. Ask him if he knows who John Wooden is - I'd bet he knows.

Tom I am certain you are unaware that our inbounds plays are designed to burn 33 seconds off the clock before an off balanced jump shot. Geez, aren't you even watching?

Being so self-absorbed has caused your reading skills to slip Beast.
In your chest beating, you glossed over the fact that I said recruits know nor care about Wooden. Name a recruit outside of UCLA who cares about Wooden.
And the thread was in reference to Keady. Never did I say he costs us anything besides being a seat warmer while he plays Tic Tac Toe during games. Waste = provides nothing. If he did, I'd think we'd have run a play or two this year.

But keep projecting, itchy finger.

I just think that except for your little mob of detractors, you say little of value. Keady is a 6 time national coach of the year. I would think that anyone with that ability is of value in an advisory capacity. Do you really think a six time national coach of the year has nothing to say? It's a foolish comment, period.

Re-read what you said about Wooden. I think perhaps that someone like you cannot appreciate the history of the game, nor the accomplishments of those before you. Maybe a certain number of recruits have no idea about who Wooden is. After all, a lot of major leaguers don't know much about Jackie Robinson, but that's sad. I would think our kids, like the kids you reference at UCLA, respect and know that Keady knows basketball. I would imagine he's allowed to speak to kids off the court or practice floor, but I'm not sure. I'm curious though. Did you graduate St. John's in 98, or were you born in 98. The answer will be illuminating.

Nothing, and I repeat nothing, drove me more crazy this year on the court. If you go into the game threads you will see me complaining about this every game. It was the same thing over and over again. Opponent has the ball under their basket. We set up in a man to man defense. Opponent sets 2 screens.Ball is inbounded. Opponent gets wide open 10-15 foot jump shot or in some cases, drives for a layup. ARGHHHHHHH!!!

I think guys need to take into account that certain players are coach-proof overall or in some areas. There are also guys that are raw that need a few seasons. We all wan Antony Lee from Temple, but the kid averaged 3 pts and 3 boards as a soph before blowing up. No coach in the world could have turned Sampson into a three in two years. No coach in the world was going to turn Obekpa into a complete player in two years. He has made big strides, though.

Yes, it is Lavin's responsiblity to recruit good, coachable players, but he put the 2011 class together in a few months without much scouting. Other guys had 3-4 year watching the same group. He tried to get Jahii Carson, he tried to get Doron Lamb...they just didn't want to come. I think he would have done much better with more time that year and I think he's learned.

Keady isn't taking up a spot on the bench...he is an advisor and his presence is a blessing. We are lucky to have such a legend involved with our program.

Excellent point Tom. We ran the same sorry out of bounds play for most of the year. Usually wound up with Jakarr or Sanchez with the ball free throw line extended for a jumpshot, or struggling to get it in and hoisting a pass to near backcourt. I mean really? We couldn't get anything better? Pure laziness from Lavin.

Marillac are you saying that he recruited an entire team of uncoachable players? And the recruits that got away were the coachable ones?

No. I am saying that Dom Pointless is coach-proof. Wooden himself couldn't make that kid a player. Sampson is not a three and not built like a four...no coach could have turned him into a SF in just two years with his glaring weaknesses.

Jahii Carson was a near finished product. The kind of kid that makes any coach look great....Lamb as well. He tried to get those kids, but they were a little out of reach. Harkless was our most well-rounded player and our first recruit...and he bolted early and unexpectedly.

Coach recruited his best and most well-rounded player just last season. The year before he brought in CO and Sampson....very good players that need some polishing, but light years better than Dom and Greene. I really think he learned from the 2011 class and I think he has a new model for the team besides that WVU Final Four squad.

Maybe we can have Repole fund a séance and bring in Majerus as an advisor. Utah had more than 200 different out of bounds plays.

I'm OK with Keady here, and will give Whitesell another year before criticizing. And I think Chiles is generally well liked in NY.
