Julian and Draft

Long time fan and lurker here and at JJ (before it became awful).  My biggest concern moving forward is tha Julian will announce for the draft.  Sam Vecenie on theatheletic.com has him 46 on his first Big Board.  He is #3 from Big East behind Bouknight (10) and Robinson-Earl (41), and ahead of Justin (52).  He is a close comp to Saddiq Bey who was drafted 19 last year.  Shooting is the most valuable of skills and his numbers are excellent.  If he comes back the expectation has to be in NCAA easily.  Without him we are at best a bubble team.

He already said he is looking forward to playing Pitt next year. But who knows, maybe his brother goes pro or something.

either way, obviously I'm a selfish fan who wants Julian to stay, but objectively he needs more time working on his ball handling. As of now, when defenders close out on him, and he pump fakes and drives.. it is super clunky and slow. And he needs to improve that.

with that said I think Julian does have portential to be a solid 3 and D guy at the pro level I just hope he comes back for another season because I think the Big East is gonna lack star power next season and he could really shine

I don't think NBA teams will worry about his handle.  It won't be a skill that he will be expected to utillize at that level.  The biggest question for his draft stock is his ability to guard 2-4 at the NBA level.  This is where Saddiq Bey was well advanced.  Julian has been better with steals and blocking shots, but has not been the on ball perimeter defender that Bey was at Nova.  The fact that we are the worst defensive team in the Big East will also hurt him.  The fact that he has improved so much and is used to being a role player are positives.  There are lots of guys that are used to being "The Man" and can never comfortable playing their role.  That won't be an issue for Julian.

Just have to wait to see where he winds up in the projections.  There are a lot of reasons to stay, but this will be a financial decision.  If he is projected to go in the first round, then it is a serious decision.  If he is in the top 15, it's no decision.....he has to go.

Julian has no shot at first round, let around top 15 this year.

do you watch Saddiq Bey on the pistons?

he basically just takes threes and plays defense. But a big part of getting open threes at the pro level is handling the ball and being somewhat elusive. Bey is pretty solid with the ball in his hands. Sure, JC could probably spot up in the corner and get a couple shots a game. But for him to be looked at as a serious potential first round pick, he needs to show a little more skill off the bounce. In my opinion

The better decision is to play his junior year and improve his skill set even more. He will not be drafted on potential, primaruily because he is not the monster athlete that so many players are in the league. It's just crazy to leave unless one is projected to go in the first round.

The D in 3 and D refers to defense. What lateral quickness to you see from JC that would make you think he can guard wing players in the NBA?

Best chance to get to the NBA is to stay and improve his game.  If he just is interested in playing pro he can leave after this year.  He's a nice player, but he's not a superstar at this point.  Worke on his game and let his body fill in would be my advise.  Nothing wrong with staying 4 years.

I just don't see Julian as a first round draft choice at this point. Really think he could benefit from at least one more year with us where he would more than likely be first team all BE (again) on a better team that should dance and get him more national exposure plus give him the chance to work on his defense and abiity to create his own shot going to the hoop.

Julian has a skill set that makes me think he can play in the NBA. That said, I would be surprised if he were to be drafted this season and he needs to continue to develop. Would like to see him be more aggressive at times.

That's interesting, that's the first big board of mock draft site I've heard of Julian being on, I've seen Justin on a couple.  I'm not sure how credible the athletic is when it comes to mock drafts.  I usually check ESPN mock draft (formly draft express) and nbadraft.net, those are usually the 2 most credible that has the most connections, and neither have Julian listed.

As far as Julian leaving after this year, like others have said, it's more likely that he returns unless he's just eager to be a pro, which I don't get that vibe from him. He has much more to gain from returning, as he's most likely a late 2nd rounder or goes undrafted and with there still being restrictions with Covid, who knows if there will be a combine or if teams will be allowed to host them for private workouts, those would be the only chances he has to improve on that draft stock.  He's still young at 19 years old, coming back working on his ball handling, getting quicker, working on creating his own shot, and working on his on ball defense will make him a much better looking prospect for next year's draft.  As of right, he's more of just a catch and shoot guy, and a guy that get's hustle and fast break points.

The Athletic is generally excellent.  I forget where Sam Vecenie (their draft expert) was before, but he has been doing this for a long time and he is going by what agents, scouts and front office staff are saying.  In the article he said this time last year the top 21 of his Big Board all wound up being drafted in the 1st round and his top 34 drafted.  He goes on to say that there is a lot more uncertainty this year and doesn't expect to duplicate those results.

Unfortunately, no matter what we think, these kids do whatever they want. Hopefully his father talks to him about his lack of readiness, but who knows. That's why it's tough to get too excited about the best players on your respective team.

I can understand your concerns, but bro we all have to move on, which is why Julian decided to draft. Looking at it as a fan, it's clear that you're angry. Looking at this, as a person, you understand everything

Huh?
