The Jordan Brand Classic will be played tomorrow Friday at the Barclay's Center. The national game will be at 7 PM (televised on ESPN2) and is filled with just about every one of the top twenty ranked recruits in the country (hello Duke, Kentucky, Kansas and North Carolina). There are two big east recruits playing in this game - Isaiah Whitehead (Seton Hall) and L. J. Peak(Georgetown).

The regional game precedes the national game and is scheduled to start at 4:30 PM. Newly committed St. John's recruit Adonis DelaRosa will be playing in this game, which features seven top 100 rated recruits. There are four Seton Hall recruits in this game as well (Angel Delgado top fifty, Khadeen Carrington, Desi Rodriguez and Ismael Sanogo). It should be fun. If I get there early enough for the regional game I will try and post about Delarosa. I saw him two years ago at Christ The King but he was very raw, significantly overweight and completely out of shape then. I assume he has made some huge strides since to be able to attract major D1 programs.

Just returned from the Barclay Center where I watched both the regional and national games.

First here are some thoughts on our recent commit Adonis DelaRosa. He is much improved from when I saw him two years ago. He has dropped considerable weight and he is significantly quicker than he was, but two years ago I could not have imagined him playing D1 ball anywhere.

He is definitely a work in progress and has quite a ways to go. He will need to work on his conditioning, primarily running, because he does not get up and down the court well. There were many possessions that he just took the play off and did not bother to run at all. Although he is a big body and takes up quite a bit of space, he is not a defensive presence and will not likely be a shot blocker because he does not jump well.

On the positive side he is physically strong and can push people around in the low box to get where he needs to go in the paint. He knows how to use his body effectively. Once he gets the ball, his footwork is good and he knows how to draw fouls and get to the line. He missed half of his foul shots on four trips to the line going four for eight. He wound up the game with 12 points and 7 boards.

Additionally in half court sets he knew how to play and showed some good basketball IQ. If I had to compare him to a type. It would be a type like Josh Smith of Georgetown formerly of UCLA. He is however nowhere as athletic or talented as Smith. In fact Adonis stood out in this game because he was slower and less athletic than any other player, but also bigger and stronger. He was able to push around Pascal Chukwu a 7' 1" Providence commit on the low blocks easily whenever Adonis wanted the ball down low.

Lastly I got a chance to talk to him for a minute and he seemed like a really nice kid. He was wearing St. John's gear and seemed happy to be staying local. He will be an easy person to root for and although I think it will take some time (a couple of years at least) he could develop into a low post presence for us, especially if we play a system that caters to his strengths.

As for the rest of the regional game the Seton Hall players all played well especially Khadeen Carrington (named MVP) 18 points 7 rebounds and 5 assists. Also Seton Hall commits Desi Rodriguez had twenty points and Angel Delgado had seventeen rebounds. Seton Hall should be improved next year.

The national game's talent level was of course head and shoulders above the regional game. Duke is stacked with four top recruits especially game MVP Jahlil Okafor a 6' 11" lightning quick center (29 points and 9 rebounds). He is a one and done player who will likely be the first pick in the 2015 NBA draft. The other game MVP was Cliff Alexander a 6 ' 9" physically strong and athletic center headed to Kansas.

There were a few other standouts to me: Stanley Johnson, once mentioned on this sight as a possibility for us, is a super talented small forward with a complete game. He has a great three point shot, is lightning quick in the open court, has great ability to get his shot off in traffic, has excellent court vision and displayed very good passing skills. He is headed to Arizona and I think he will be a big star there. Also Emanuel Mudiay is an extremely talented point guard headed to SMU. He is as gifted a guard as I have seen in several years. He seemed to be able to shred the defense at will. He is very athletic, strong and quick and seems like a total winner to me. Lastly I should mention Tyus Jones a pass first point guard headed to Duke. He had ten points, eleven assists and seven rebounds and set up everybody on the court well.

All in all a very fun night of hoops in Brooklyn.

I know some on the sight are not impressed with Carrington but I think along with Whitehead that is a pretty good backcourt.

There is no way Carrington and Whitehead play in the backcourt together since neither is a point guard. They will both be wing players with Whitehead because of his size playing the 3. If Willard con get these kids to buy into playing as a team Seton Hall will be improved but don't expect to much to soon.

RE: Seton Hall

D1 is not AAU or all-star tourneys

I think Delgado and Desi's games (if they both qualify) transfer better to D1 than Khadeen. But I don't see much success there until possibly the latter half of their sophomore years.

We've seen what putting AAU squads together can do. It translates into selfish and sloppy basketball.

SH will be stacked with a bunch of guards and nothing on the frontline. Coupled with a lack of veteran leadership and I don't think they'll make a dent next year.

The hype is good but Willard has to coach them up. The power play between Willard, Shaheen and Morton on the sidelines will be popcorn-worthy.

They've also got Auda and Mobley coming back in the frontcourt, both of whom are seasoned at this point. I think Hall could be a real surprise this year.

Jin Rothstein tweeted that he would not be shocked to see Seton Hall use regular 4G sets next year and as play fast as possible. Sina, Gibbs, Carrington, Whitehead and Delgado is a better rebounder than anyone we currently have on the roster.

Irrelevant.

A 4 guard set would get them slaughtered.

Villanova did alright with 4 guards. Im of the belief that if those 4 guards are your 4 best players, then play your 4 best players.

Agree since we lack even the semblance of a rebounder!

Exactly. I've felt this way since before Nova almost won the national championship with a 6'4 PG at PF. You have to play your best players. A 2-3 defense hides a small PF very well.

A really good defensive 6'4/6'5 player can easily play the four and end up being a net positive for his team.

Ain't none of Seton Hall's guards Kyle Lowry or Randy Foye who were strong and tough as hell. Allan Ray could shoot it and Mike Mardi could run a team. All four are still getting paid. Two in the NBA and two overseas.

Great points. Nova had some tough kids: Lowry and Foye. However, they also were all point guards! It wasn't even like they were 2/3's like what Michigan throws out there. They were also upper classmen.

Then again, they also came a DREADFUL call away from getting to the NCAA title game. Nobody thinks SH can enjoy that kind of succcess, but 21 wins and a nine or ten seed is very, very different.

True. They will most of the time go with a 3 guard set: Sina (pg), Gibbs and Whitehead.

They will still be regularly slaughtered though

Those are not SH's best 4 players. And you're discounting veterans in that equation.
