I've actually officiated games she has played. Nice commitment for the program.
How is St. Mary's girls bb doing? I'd imagine with a player like that, they competed at the upper rungs of the conference. They were perennial bottom dwellers for a long time. Do you know what AAU program she plays for? Thanks!
They are great. They had 3 kids transfer in 2 yrs ago from the city, including Augustus. Don't know what AAU team she plays for.
I
Do you know who their coach is?
Tommy Flynn
Thanks! I was thinking of Kevin White who was associated with the Heat. Nice to see St. Mary's win. SJB had a good run, as did Trinity, Dom's, and even Kellenberg for a couple of years. Too many CHSAA schools "recruit" kids from public schools, and get kids financial aid to become bball powerhouses.
Ah, thats what St.Mary's did except from a Queens CHSAA school. Last year the SJB coach
got fired and took his whole team to another school, the whole thing stinks.
Haha. I'm no longer plugged in to girls CHSAA bball, but Ted Oberg is a sociopath. He built a powerhouse at SJB by stealing kids and using his AAU team to coerce kids to transfer. Despite carrying 12 kids on that roster he would try to coerce players he wanted to transfer by letting them stay on the floor as long as they wanted. In AAU players often travel 100-200 miles to a tournament, and gluing the bottom 3-4 players to the bench in this system is egregious. In addition, I have never seen a coach act as poorly as Oberg from the bench, bellowing at referees, getting thrown out of gyms, and having the police called when he refused to leave. It's about time SJB fired him - they should have never hired him.
The LI CHSAA often had a cast of characters coaching girls bball. Michelle O'Brien of St. Dom's would taunt referees, screaming at them "You'll never ref a game at the Island Garden again!" when a family member controlled that facility, and the refs too afraid to T her up.
There was a coach at Sacred Heart who used their gym without permission to offer tutoring to players at a fee, even his own players - a kind of pay to play arrangement. When they tried to fire him, he hired a lawyer and played the race card. The kid they ultimately replaced him with was barely out of diapers, and didn't have a clue.
Debbie Brajewich (sp) was so disliked by Kellenberg that she was fired after winning a Class B or C state championship. So, yea, even girls basketball has a ton of nefarious behavior.
