For those of us in grade school in the 1960s, John Glenn was as heroic an American as anyone. Vague recollections of a grade school teacher rolling in a B&W TV on a cart into the classroom so the class could watch the launch or re-entry or status of a space mission. It was a glorious decade of our space program that culminated in the lunar landing.
For most of us to be a war hero, or astronaut, or a high ranking politician would be the pinnacle of accomplishment. Senator Glenn accomplished all three, and for good measure flew on the space shuttle at age 77. Clearly one of the greatest of the Greatest Generation. R.I.P. to a true American icon and hero who helped define the best of the 20th century
