“Given Soriano’s growth this summer, St. John’s fans hope this is portent of what’s to come.
Playing instinctively and with a sense of relentlessness as he attacked the boards, Soriano looked like a man possessed.”

“Soriano shot 60.7 percent from the floor and knocked back 19-for-28 from the free throw line. One year after trimming down from 280 pounds and kicking a habit of late night snacks (at teammates Posh Alexander and Dylan Wusu’s urging) to better adjust to Mike Anderson’s souped up attack, Soriano has made conditioning a livelihood and worked his way into top-shelf shape.”

“Joel was committed to getting better every single day on and off the court,” Massaroni, whose current roster features St. John’s targets such as 2024 five star recruit Boogie Fland and slick Class of 2025 point guard Danny Carbuccia, recalled.”

“He would work out twice, if not three times a day with (Stepinac Associate Head Coach) Rodney Swain and want to get better.”

Absolutely fantastic new if we can have 3 proven scorers in our starting line up , obviously with Joel being the third, good things will happen. Not to mention that conditioning is contagious amongst teammates.

I'm having flashback right now to Josh Roberts getting in sick shape after his sophomore season and most of the fans thinking he was gonna blow up his junior year. Funny thing is, his sophomore season stats were pretty damn close to Soriano's stats last season. I like Joel's game, but let's not get carried away now.

Josh got in better physical shape but he didn’t show any development on offense with his new physique even against inferior competition. Soriano, on the other hand, has shown a variety of new moves and a better face up game and a jump shot.

I’m not getting carried away but I can easily see the improvements in Joel from last year.

Agree you can’t get too carried away. He checks the boxes for getting in shape, being more confident and assertive in small sample, but still has to show he can stay out of foul trouble, not get caught out of position and be consistent offensively v BE level bigs. Time will tell, but he seems off to a good start very early.

Not comparing their games, as Joel is more of a traditional low post player, just comparing the lofty expectations. I fully expect that we'll see some improvement in Joel's game, only time will tell how much. As Paultz put it.

Joel more of a traditional low post player than Josh? Josh had no post presence at all besides rebounds, dunks and put backs. Joel will be better this year. He doesn’t have to meet lofty expectations in my book, just be a solid inside presence.

He played great in all 3 exhibition games including the last one which was a pretty good national team. I’m optimistic.

He was pretty good at the end of last season as well and now he’s in better shape so I join in your optimism.

Soriano is just a much better player than he was for Fordham, better than we had any reason to expect. Key for us will be whether he can compete with top BE bigs like Kalkbrenner & Sanogo; if he can that bodes very well for us imho.

While he was at Fordham, I was initially impressed and then as I saw him a few more times I was less impressed. So, by the time he transferred & we signed him, I wasn't high on the potential.

He and staff have done well & worked hard... and while I'm still not sold he's ideal for this style, Id be thrilled with him putting up 8 & 8 in 20 min. This year will be telling to see if he can really hang in there with big time bodies and hold it down.

This all reminds me of Chris Obekpa’s “breakout” year. I remember he had something like a triple double in a closed door scrimmage and everyone thought he was the next Kareem.

JS is the man to put on the cover of St. John’s Player Development Book.

Josh Roberts never would have put up Soriano's soph stats at Fordham. He didn't even do it as a senior at Manhattan, so it's not a great comparison. Especially since Joel has 3 inches and 40 lbs. on him.

Obekpa probably would have set the NCAA single season record for blocks at Fordham, but I'm not sure he would have scored 10 ppg there.

I personally think Joel does more for us this season than either of those guys did, and I bet he doesn't get suspended before a tournament game for failing a drug test either. But I guess we'll see.

Just for fun(not the former poster):

Compared to everyone from Dennis Rodman to Leroy Ellis. I rest my case.

Glad I apparently sat that one out, other than calling him out for lying about his height. 😁

I’m not looking for Soriano to be a breakout star, although I would love to see that happen. I just want noticeable improvement from last year and I believe that will be the case.

As far as fouling is concerned, I'm more concerned about him getting caught is switches on quicker players out top. I thought he improved his fouling on bigs as the BE season went on. Didn't Sanogo get in early foul trouble against us in the second yukon game?

Switching and having him isolated on quicker player is recipe for problems, but staff seems ok with it. Hopefully it is addressed, but they get paid, not me.
