Joe Panik earned MVP honors in the Northwest League as a rookie.

Aug. 31, 2011

QUEENS, N.Y. - Less than three months after signing a contract with the San Francisco Giants organization following his selection in the first round of the MLB Draft, Joe Panik is already making his presence felt in professional baseball. The rookie shortstop of the Class-A Short Season Salem-Keizer Volcanoes was named the Northwest League Most Valuable Player and was one of just two unanimous All-League selections.

"It is a tremendous honor to win this award and it is particularly special to win it as a rookie," said Panik. "To cap my rookie season with this accomplishment is a great feeling."

Panik currently leads the league in hits (87), runs scored (49) and RBI (52), and is tied for first with a .332 batting average with just four regular season games remaining. The shortstop is also second in on-base percentage (.395), tied for fifth in slugging percentage (.462) and tied for tenth in stolen bases (13).

The league-leader among shortstops with a .962 fielding percentage, Panik has collected 10 doubles, six home runs and three triples this season for the Volcanoes.

An All-American, Brooks Wallace Award Finalist, Golden Spikes Award Semifinalist, first team All-BIG EAST selection and Academic All-American as a junior, Panik concluded his St. John's career ranked second all-time in batting average (.370), sixth in hits (237), third in RBI (157), fourth in doubles (48) and fifth in home runs (25). A two-time All-BIG EAST selection, Panik also earned Freshman All-America honors as a rookie with the Red Storm.

SAN FRANCISCO -- Outfielder Gary Brown and infielder Joe Panik, the Giants' last two top Draft picks, joined the group of 25 players named Wednesday as non-roster Spring Training invitees.

Brown, the 24th selection overall in the 2010 First-Year Player Draft, earned California League Rookie of the Year honors last season while hitting .336 with 13 triples and 53 stolen bases for Class A San Jose. Panik, the Draft's 29th overall choice last June, led the Northwest League with a .341 batting average, 49 runs, 54 RBIs and a .401 OBP (on-base plus slugging percentage) for Salem-Keizer and captured the league's Most Valuable Player award.

From Baseball America. They rank prospects based upon on their results from the week. Joe came in #8.

Team: high Class A San Jose (California)
Age: 21
Why He's Here: .519/.567/.926 (14-for-27), 2 HR, 3 2B, 1 3B, 12 R, 9 RBIs, 2 BB, 2 SO
The Scoop: Even by Cal League standards, San Jose's entire lineup had an amazing week. The Giants scored in double-digits in five straight games from Aug. 3-8. Panik was in the middle of all of it, batting second in the order and scoring at least one run in six straight games. He's also working on a 15-game hitting streak and owns a .344/.415/.478 slash line in the second half. Panik is best known for his smooth stroke at the plate, but the 2011 first-rounder has impressed in the field as well. His arm strength continues to be a question, but he leads Cal League shortstops with a .972 fielding percentage, has made just two errors since July 1 and was voted the circuit's best defensive shortstop in our Best Tools survey of league managers.
