Joe Hammond - Rucker Street ball legend - Daily News article

Great story Red stormNC . I enjoyed reading it. I remember hearing about all those guys when I was in my late teens and early twenties(Manigualt, Helicopter and Hammond). Never saw any of them play, but did see some great summer league games in Queens with guys like World B Free, Fly Williams and Nate Archibald.

If you never heard of joe hammond, the city game is a must read. Joe hammond, herman the helicopter, connie Hawkins and earl manigault (the goat), all ruled the rucker and playgrounds in an era where nba stars would come to play on asphalt against those legends and often get outplayed.

I have had the chance to meet and become friends with Joe Hammond in Harlem back when the Kingdome games were the place to be. I've seen him hustle a lot of teens and others out of money playing horse or 1 0n 1 because they went by his looks. Rough life of his own making but a good dude

That's a great story. I didnt read the article till after I posted so my post looks like I reiterated the article.

So many schoolyard legends were already addicts by hs, and had college and pro careers derailed by the streets.

Thanks for sharing Patrick.
