Jayson's sense of humor & speaking freely often is a problem. :)

"Oakley’s supporters have stood by him. That includes former St. John’s and NBA center Jayson Williams, who told an interesting tale about how Oakley helped him out when he was looking for some cash in college.

Here’s the story from Williams’ interview CBS Sports Radio’s Gio and Jones, where he detailed Oakley lending him some serious dough when he was s senior at St. John’s:
This is where we’re going to put the NCAA and St. John’s in trouble,” Williams said. “So, how we did it at St. John’s was when you were in your senior year, and the guys who made it before you goes to the NBA, that guy would give you, let’s call it like a loan so you don’t have to go out and get an agent or put St. John’s in any trouble with the NCAA.

So when my year was up and I was a senior, it was Mark Jackson. Now if anybody knows Mark Jackson, Mark is the greatest human being on Earth – but cheap as the day is long. That man is so frugal.

Jackson was drafted in the first round of the 1987 draft, so when Williams entered his senior year in 1990, he thought he would benefit from the St. John’s tradition. But Jackson played him stiff when he asked for $15,000.

“After I came back about the fifth time, [Oakley] came over to me. I had never met him, always looked up to him, everybody wanted to be a Charles Oakley-type player. He said, ‘Come here, man. Once you ask somebody once and they ain’t going to give it to you, you don’t beg. What you do is follow me home after.’ Went home and he gave me 20 (and said) ‘When you get drafted, I’m going to want 25 back.’”

Williams, who played in the NBA for the 76ers and the Nets, became good friends with Oakley, who was one of the only guys who came to see Williams in prison, Williams said. Ever since that moment where he loaned him money, the two stayed in contact. Even if he was charging an arm and a leg in interest.

Said Williams: “He charged me mafia rates, but I didn’t get nobody in trouble and we’ve been friends ever since, man. That’s how we became friends, and we own a chain of car washes (and) steakhouses. Whatever business (we go in, we help each other).”

This process may be legal, get a wink from the NCAA, and a nice SJU tradition (and I suspect might be the same at other schools) but this story and process stinks to the high heavens.

The "wink" is probably the fact that he returned the money, with interest (although after his eligibility ended).

NCAA generally lifts suspensions for extra financial benefits once players return the money (I believe that was one of the things Erik Barkley got in trouble for). But, they may hit us with 5 years probation, in order to save UNC's butt.

I was out with a guy that works for the NBA a couple of weeks back and he had some crazy Oakley stories.

Would be good to have JW and/or Oak teach these guys how to rebound and play D.

this is the perfect excuse for the NCAA to put pencils down on the UNC investigation and go after SJU!

If it's even true, it was almost 30 years ago and it was between Jayson and Oakley. All indicators are that SJU nothing to do with it. I suspect that the NCAA has more recent and more pressing matters to investigate. Having said that, IMO Jayson should keep his mouth shut about such things, stay out of the spotlight, and focus on re-building his life.

i was kidding about the lack of movement on UNC case. tho the ncaa is criminal, they're not going to go after st johns for a 30 year old questionable infraction

Jayson should be made an assistant coach. So should Metta

Walter deserves first shot at it.

If not for the fact that we've already perfected the matador D, I woulda said "ain't that The Truth"

Maybe so, but he has the most famous blocked shot in SJ history.

Walter is one of my all-time favorite Johnnies, and it would be very cool to have him around the program, but if we're looking for an ex-player to teach our big men how to box out, rebound and play hard-nosed D, give me the likes of a Ty Grant, Billy Singleton, Lamont Middleton, AG, etc any day of the week.

Go old school - George Johnson, don't know what his interest level would be, pretty sure he's local. He could board and was a very effective inside scorer.

Teaching those things is really pretty easy and far from rocket science; I don't think that is remotely the problem. I would be willing to bet each and every one of our players could teach HOW to box out or HOW to play defense, our problem is we don't have enough players with enough desire to APPLY those teachings. We need to expand our roster to a competitive level in terms of fighting for playing time to figure out if the coaching staff puts much stock in those things. Unfortunately, right now, we don't have anything resembling enough depth to tell.
