http://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/story/_/id/22436614/inside-villanova-epic-five-year-run
I respect the hell out of Jay Wright but, as I have posted before, he would have been run out of many schools before he got to the recruiting period referenced here, which was 10 years after he got to Nova. They gave him the opportunity to finally figure it out and he did, big time.
I recall this article posted here last year. Nevertheless, he wasn't gonna be "ran outta town" after the type of talent he was bringing in during his first three seasons at Villanova. His seat, though, was getting warm after his third season due to his mediocre results, and he knew he had to deliver in some way during his fourth season (which I've heard him mention a time or two) at the helm.
Wright delivered with a 24-8 record (11-5 in the Big East), 3rd place conference finish and a Sweet 16 appearance (a game where I felt they should've won). The rest is history.
You can ignore history all you want, Wright’s seat was more than warm significantly into his Nova career, that is a fact. Good recruiting and less than expected results had many powerful alumni lobbying for a change. Yes, he made the NCAA but he also suffered some unexpected early exits. My point is not to knock Wright in the least, it was to praise the administration for making a great choice and sticking with it. I will stick to my mantra of it takes time, even for the best, to build a consistent nationally powerful program. Except for the cheaters.
I have no qualms about you sticking to your mantra, but what I posted is fact. The early exit losses basically started AFTER he had taken the program to its first Final Four in 24 years.
Year 4: Sweet 16
Year 5: Elite 8
Year 6: 1st round exit
Year 7: Sweet 16
Year 8: Final Four
Then the run of early exits started. By that time, he had bought himself some leeway, although the natives were getting restless due to the early tournament exits. He was also still recruiting at a high level.
It can take time to build a nationally powerful program, but it's not written anywhere that it HAS to take time. I totally understand where you're coming from, but don't necessarily agree.
I know what his record is and it is absolutely and totally irrelevant to my point. As usual, and as you state, we just disagree.
It's only irrelevant because you're stuck on some fallacious mantra. Oh, well....
No it’s irrelevant because regardless of what his record was, there were people with some degree of influence who were not satisfied with that record and wanted him replaced. You are so quick to want to disagree and argue that you don’t bother to read and understand what is written. Oh, well
I read and comprehended everything you wrote. I was well aware of those people who was getting exhausted with Wright. But like I said, he continued to buy himself some time as he produced when he had to (in his 4th season) do so, and went on good, tournament run before his string of early exits. It bought him some leeway, although the early exits was ticking off some natives. I also only used his record as a reference, as it did matter during his 4th season. The record almost always matter, except in unique situations.
Deny if you like, but that's on point. So, don't try to play me with that argumentative BS. Besides, I thought you had long stopped posting here anyway after your teenager girl-like soliloquy.
