Jakarr Sampson - Why the Regression?

Is it just me or has Jakarr regressed big time after showing such promise last season? I mean we heard these stories of him running pickup games over the summer with his good friend LeBron, and throwing down dunks on everyone, but this season it's like the spark isn't there outside a few games. His stats across the board are pretty much the same as last year except for scoring which is down. Was looking for him to make the big step forward, just hasn't happened. He's still a freakish athlete, and the potential will always be there, I haven't given up hope.

It is not just you. Boils down to two things in my opinion: style of play + confidence.

Our half-court style neutralizes him. When we were running up and down in the 2nd half against Wisconsin he was unstoppable. When his transition game gets going he seems to feed off of that in other areas. We haven't been able to do that this year and it's hindered him.

Perhaps as a result of that (or for whatever reason) it seems like his confidence has taken a hit, especially of late. He's hesitating, trying to baby stuff around the rim, and looks like he's aiming his jumper (which was a strong and consistent part of his game last year). Last night he had 3-4 plays that were dunks last year that didn't get converted or were blocked.

Tons of talent and seems like a terrific kid, hope he turns it around. If we were to turn just one game into a full-court game I think he would thrive and pop out of this slump, but I'm not going to get my hopes up there.

I said it on another thread last week, I would prefer lavin played more Obekpa and less of Sampson, unless we are running and gunning. if you are going to play half court, Sampson needs to find the bench. His jumper has not gotten any better at all..He wasnt much of a jump shooter to begin with. His spacing on the floor is poor, and he does not move well without the ball, or set quality screens for Hooper running the baseline.

His one handed botched dunk in the first half when a layup would have been suffice sums up this team.
Too, can anybody grab a weak side rebound other than Harrison. The fact that a guard is our best weak side rebounder is sad.
Give me more God's Gift. While limited offensively, at least he tries to rebound. He also hustles.

I really believe that he and Orlando Sanchez can not co-exist together on the court. Nobody's fault, they are just too similar, and get in each other's way. If you notice, both of them seem to play better when the other is out.

I think Jakarr will rebound from this, but not until next year, when Orlando is gone.

Gods gift saved the team last night when he came in. Played good D, rebounded, took a charge, hit a bucket. That missed dunk was terrible and dumb, that technical foul was one of the dumbest things I have seen. Dom should be suspended for 5 games for doing such a stupid thing.

I agree . And futhermore on Sanchez he is 6 9 he needs to rebound , esp on the defensive end. He has been the biggest disappointment so far in my eyes. And what was with the flexing after a lay up?

I also was impressed w Gift. Hes not an offensive threat. But hes strong, was a good post presence and I thought played good D against Depauls bigs.

How do you see Sanchez and Sampson being too similar? Last names that start with S? Sampson is nowhere near the passer Sanchez is, and seems much faster.

I give LAvin credit for trying to win games by finding the right combination, but Hooper's ceiling is about at Sampson's shoelaces, and by benching him I think you shoot his confidence to sh*t. He has been elite all his life, and to suddenly become a bench player, I can't see that as good. I thought he looked like he was going to have a bust out game vs. Nova, but fouls derailed that quickly. If this is a tourney team, or going to make a run at it, Jakarr must be a big part of it. IF we are throwing in the towel for the season, then I guess you play who listens to you in practice.

.

Those are about the only differences. They both like to set up on the perimeter, and both like to take a ton of mid-range jumpers. Neither one of them even attempts to go inside, and we have no inside scorers to compensate.

I think they both play like tweener forwards, but when both are playing well I like both their games.

But, other then the Fordham game (which is looking more and more like a fluke every day), they haven't both played well yet. Different position, but it's kind of like when the Knicks had both Ewing and Cartwright, and tried to play them both together. It was a disaster.

Until the last few games I was laying the poor play mostly on the coaches but of late it has shifted to a few players. Jakarr Sampson in particular. He has not regressed, he has not progressed to being a smart team player. This is a kid with limited offensive tools from the outside and most of the season he has made bad decisions in his shot selection. Instead of playing closer to the basket, like Sanchez, he tends to roam and once he has the ball tends to force his move. it usually does not end well since he telegraphs the move. Of the entire team he appears to have the lowest BB IQ. That will only change with hard work and experience.
Two other players that get significant playing time to prove their value are Phil Greene and Dom Pointer. Both have hurt the offense more than helped this year and need reduced minutes in favor of a Jamal Branch or Felix (there must be a same reason Lavin activated him)!
As far as in-game performance these guys have let the coaches down. Missed bunnies, mental mistakes and poor on court communication, especially at the end of games, has cost at least two wins with DePaul being the best example to date.

In terms of mental mistakes- burning that last timeout was just inexplicable.

One of the plays that irritated me last night was Jakarr putting the ball on the floor in heavy traffic when he had an opportunity to go straight up

When did he burn his final? Was it when we had the ball and ended up taking the Sanchez threw air ball after it? Was that the final or was there are another timeout called later??

Burned it right after Depaul called timeout with the ball with 30 something to go in the game. Lavin saw them set up, apparently didn't think we were prepared for it, and called timeout.

In my opinion, it's not a regression, it is who he is. Last year there was no one else to put in, so Jakarr got tons of minutes, made his mistakes, and also put up some decent stats. We overhyped him because our team was so poor, and he was all we had. This year, with more options, when he makes those awful mistakes, he comes out of the game.

He wouldnt have been the BE ROY if we had a full squad last year. Simple as that.

There are so many flaws in JaKarr's game right now, but his biggest problem is stubbornness right now. If he gets the ball on the wing, nobody else is going to touch the ball that possession. Whether or not he has a good luck, he is going to put it up. And what makes it so much worse is his shot is just brutal. It's flat and has no arc to it whatsoever.
