Jacob Toppin, F, Woodstock Academy

[quote="MarkRedman" post=348984]Grant Kelly:

Dayton, Virginia Tech, URI, St John's and Oklahoma State are Jacob Toppin's final five schools according to Obi's Instagram.

Obi is Jacob's older brother who plays at Dayton
Never heard of this kid before

VC has him rated a 2*.
Can't find any other ranking of him, except NewEnglandRecruitingReport ranks him #67 in NE and #24 in CT.
Guessing he'll choose Dayton, since his brother likely returning.
Had no clue we're recruiting this kid.
Are we?
But who knows.
Lol.

Quite a few good schools on his list. Our staff had taken pride in finding some diamonds in the rough. staff must see something. Not much out there about the kid. Our last 2 commits have been out of left field. Nothing would surprise me at this point.

Frankly, these recruiting sites are usually so out of date they're of questionable value. Interested to hear what some of our insiders have to say about this kid and whether we are actively recruiting him.

VC doesn’t appear ‘out of date’ in this case NCJ, since it’s most recent data of the schools interested in JT are from about a month ago, and they tracked URIs interest back in February.
I’m just curious that no other major recruiting site has the kid rated/ranked at all.
It could be that this kid is one of the best still available and hence appealing to schools that still have open roster spots.
I totally trust our staff to get it right.
Still, one would ‘think’ JT opts for Dayton if his brother returns to college.
We shall see.

Chicago, I don't care what the sites say, they are well known to not be sufficiently staffed to keep things current and if you look at ESPN or any of the other sites they are generally woefully out of date or just flat out wrong with respect to SJU recruits. The only reason their prediction rate on commits is not terrible is they update their predictions and get things "right" just before kids commit. I have learned to ignore them and pay a lot more attention to what I read on redmen.com when it comes to who we are recruiting and our chances.
Just my view.

NCJ, I’m not debating the quality of VC or any of the others major recruiting services, their track records, who they miss or get. Dunno and don’t care.
All I’m saying is that VC had all the schools recruiting JT from a month ago, that we learned today are in his’Top 5’; he wasn’t tracked by any other site; this interest might be ‘late’ by these schools to fill their open needs, that one would think he’ll opt for Dayton if his brother returns to college, and that I trust our staff to get evaluations right versus their immediate needs.
Let’s fill the roster with the best recruits we can find.
That’s not up for debate either. All I’m sayin’.

Two things about this thread I find the most interesting is that I have no idea what position he plays or how tall he is.

He’s either 6-6 or 6-7; I think he’s an SF, and his mom thinks he’s skinny.
Lol.
And the tweet says we’re in his Top 5, which are: Dayton (where his brother played last season as a RS Fr and led the team in scoring), URI, Okla State, VA Tech, and us.
That’s all I know.

Just saw on the VT board that they have no idea who this guy is either, but just noticed they are in his top 5.

I was searching for info on him, and apparently a 2022 Dayton target is Ramel Lloyd Jr.

Man, I feel old.

Are we sure he definitely wants to follow his brother? He’s got offers from better schools. Sounds like a late bloomer that schools really jumped on now. Agree the fact that he visited Dayton officially seems important but might not be all-telling. SJU really recruiting under he radar with CMA and Co. Refreshing to see us actually scouting HS kids again and having a staff scouring for talent. Will be even more fun in future classes where the staff has a bit of a running start, not just scrambling for late gems.

If his brother stays then UD will be interesting next year. Lost only one significant piece (Cunningham) who was their leading rebounder and second-leading scorer after Obi Toppin. If Obi stays pro, I think UD becomes less attractive though. At that point, they have lost about 1/3 of their scoring and rebounding presence. I am not saying that makes us more attractive, but without Obi and Cunningham UD will have to find a new set of go-to guys. Having missed any postseason tournaments last year, losing both of these guys doesn't make the prospects of a postseason appearance next year look favorable. He may go anyway. His brother had a good experience. UD is a pretty nice campus, even if Dayton is a freaking armpit. (Plus Zombie Dogz is right across the street - I love me some Zombie dogs - Germanators are incredible). If he chooses it though, it isn't because it has the makings of a major basketball desitination next season (unless Obi returns).

The kid is ~2 years younger than his brother and may be developing 'late' like his brother has.
Interesting, out-of-the-blue prospect.
Would think he chooses Dayton IF his brother, Obi. returns.
But who knows...
