Jackson vs Sanon

I vote for jackson but Rick seems to have it out for him. Could just be tough love to mold him for March but Rick definitely has a quick hook

Jackson seems to be a slow learner, even with his great potential. It may take a lot of “tough love” repetition for a few months to bring out the best.

I can only speak to 1 thing I picked up on from yesterday to today. Jackson left his feet 5 or 6 times against Iowa State and today on every close out he stayed disciplined and in front of the shooter. Now I’m sure there’s another 7 things that drive Rick nuts that they ar working on but nice to see improvement.

He may turn out to be special.
The “mixed” start seems to be a confidence issue also…his own and Rick’s in him.
It will come I am sure. Lots of practice, lots of “here is how it is done” on defense, and just continuing to
find his scoring moments on offense.

I thought he might be more of a scorer who creates points on drives, than a shooter; but there are indications emerging that he might be both. We just need him to be average from outside to keep the defense honest. That will help Zuby inside, Sellers outside, and facilitate his own fakes and drives. A little rebounding and more defense likely will be the key to more minutes for him.

Sanon is soft on both ends
Ayo should be getting his minutes.
You don’t just give up on Sanon at this point in the season. There’s upside there they just need to see if they can pull it out of him. I like Ayo and he should absolutely be in the rotation. But Sanon has to continue to get minutes and we gotta see if strides can be made

Jackson needs to start over Sanon - the number difference between them is shocking at this point when they play good competition (Baylor/ISU/Bama)

Sanon
4-22 FG
2-8 3P
5.3 PPG
23 MPG

Jackson
13-27 FG
5-11 3P
11 PPG
20 MPG
Too small a sample size and we always fall for a guy after he has a good game. Before the season Rick felt Sanon could have the best chance to be drafted next June.

Both have high ceilings. I'll let it play out and leave those decisions to Rick. Plenty of talent on this squad, and all rotation players will have moments to shine.

As one of the more Anti-Sanon people over the past couple days I do agree you don't give up on a guy with his raw talent before Thanksgiving. But of the 3 non-Sellers "wings" we have I do think Sanon should be getting the fewest minutes right now and the minutes distribution flattened out considerably from the Iowa State to the Baylor games.

Mins vs Iowa State
Sanon - 27
Jackson - 16
Ayo - 0
(total 43)

Mins vs Baylor
Sanon - 17
Jackson - 22
Ayo - 13
(total 52)

Sanon has been getting first crack to prove his worth and will probably be able to earn more minutes if he makes a couple shots early like he did vs Iowa State. Will be a situation to monitor in the big games coming up as well.

It was 52 today. We saw the Mitchel at the 5 with 3 wings lineup today for a few minutes.

RP is going to have to walk a tightrope with him, because Ian clearly needs tough love, but you don't want to do all the work and then have Ian transfer because all the tough love pissed him off.

I saw a great pass by Jackson and I saw Sanon fight for rebounds. Progress. Not worried about the scoring.
I saw these things as well. Both seemed to be more active on the glass. But the next time either of them manages to keep their man in front of them will be the first time. They should be athletic enough to do it. Not sure what the issue is there. Hopefully it's a work in progress and they get better at guarding the ball.

Sanon was absolutely crushing it this off season which led to proclamations of him being our most talented player . He has looked nothing of the sort on both offense or defense as of yet but i think he will become more valuable as the season goes on ( or at least i pray :) )
I think a lack of a player who can penetrate and kick the ball out has hurt him as he can really knock down the open three with ease . I like everyone else would at the very least see a little more effort from him especially on the boards ! Let's get this win tonight 🙏

I don't recall any St. John's team in the past with this kind of scoring power. Many guys can get points, especially from the frontcourt. Hard to believe it can continue all season at this clip, but who knows. W/ NIL comes pro-style offense maybe. I am concerned about the number of points given up, but if you're scoring 90 plus every game, I guess it does not matter. Particularly interesting is that we've scored at this high rate against all opponents, not just the mid majors.

I believe that both Sanon and Jackson will become more consistent and reliable as the season progresses, particularly on offense. Both too talented to not adjust and come around. I don't see either as becoming a defensive stopper by any means. But, hopefully serviceable to compliment improved offensive output.

As my hero Shaka Smart says, if there are 50 things that make you a great basketball player, shooting is only one of them. And Pitino very definitely cares about a lot of those things as much or more than he does about shooting numbers. So I think if you are just looking at shooting numbers, you are missing part of the coach's analysis.

Having said that they are both atrocious defenders thus far. So I can only assume Sanon is doing more of what Pitino wants in practice than Jackson is. Personally I would be very happy to ship them both out for a serviceable point guard, 3 basketballs and an air pump.
