Is it too late to start a football team?

I know we had one a while back, but seriously if this is the way things are going with only football schools getting respect and security, then why not get one ourselves? Follow USF's example and start out 1-AA or whatever, then work your way up to 1A. We don't even have to be amazing we just have to have a team. I know it sounds nuts, but not having football is going to kill us. The Big East is going to breathe its last breath, and I truly believe the entire conference might be gone with the leftovers going to the A10 or ACC if they play football.

I do think it would be possible if it weren't for us being a commuter school. The biggest concern is the lack of a fan base. No way we could get 30k people at games or whatever the requirement is.

I rather not take part of this college football fad. It is hurting Conferences and is making college sports all about money instead of the athletes. But I hope we stay in the Big East it will still be a strong conference.

If we were to start a team we would suck. First off whos our coach? where do we play? I just think we have too many question and not enough answers. If you can get me some solid answers I would consider it.

I don't think those questions are nearly as big as the attendance issue. All the others could be done if we really wanted to. The question is, do you really want to stay in the Big East when you know UConn, L'Ville, G'Town, Nova, and Cincy will be gone soon?

Football is a money pit for many schools.

Look up what happened to Hofstra football, a local program that even had several players in the NFL. They couldn't make a dime on it and closed shop.

St. John's will never have a D1 football program...get it out of your mind.

A money pit for some, a gold mine for others. What you said is not the case for tons of schools in major conferences. For a mid major it might be a money pit but not for power conferences. I know it's obviously next to impossible for us, especially because of space, cost, and lack of attendance but it's really a shame how football schools have all the leverage. IMO college basketball is way bigger in the Northeast than college football. It just so happens the rest of the country drools over it which I never understood, because it's always the same teams up top and there is no real playoff system.

A gold mine for a very small handful of schools.

Most schools lose money on their football programs, meaning it's a money pit for most.

There are only a handful of schools that make a true profit on football, because it has to support the entire athletic budget.

In 2010, only 22 of the 120 Division I athletic programs made a profit. 51 of the 120 football teams cost more than they took in.

If SJU were to start at Division I program, you need at least $25 million in seed money and that might cover you through three seasons.

If most teams lose money, why is all the conference shifting solely due to football and how much money it makes? Most teams would go Hofstra's route if they lost money.

Yes it is too late. I went to St Johns in the 60's and there was talk of starting a football team. It was deemed too costly. Now to start a team it would take years to develop and then you need a stadium to play in that you can fill up. We dont fit the bill.

connecticut lawmakers kicked in 90 million dollars to UCONN's football program. where would st john's get that kind of money? hardly anyone wants to kick in 100 bucks to join the red/white club.

get real.

I actually chose sju in 94 to play football before settling on baseball in college! It is never too late!

St John's should have restarted football years ago. Look at Georgia State. Just started football! Commuter school! No fans (like 3k a game)!! They play in an empty NFL stadium! Invited to the Sun Belt Conference sight on seen!!!

You either have to be a state school or have major donors backing your program to pull off a football program. It isn't going to happen at St. John's.
