Interesting quote about Mike Dunlap

New Charlotte coach Dunlap is shaking up the NBA.
from Mitch Lawrence's column:
Michael Jordan told reporters in Charlotte he’s in it for the long haul, but he’ll have to dig his way out of a crater before you want to take that to the bank. At least he sent the right message to players who are already carping about coach Mike Dunlap’s interminable practices, which include the kinds of drills his players last did in high school. “You can’t say we don’t need that stuff,’’ Jordan said. “If so, we wouldn’t be going 7-59 as a team.’’
Well I guess the pros feel like Nurideen.

Working in coach's favor is that MJ, in addition to being the greatest of all time, was also one of the greatest workers of all time, so he won't be influenced by crybaby millionaires.

That, and Dunlap told MJ and the brass EXACTLY what he was going to do, and how he was going to do it before he got the job. And if is players were listening, said it again TO the fans and players at his introductory press conference.

I think MJ knew that he needed a no nonsense coach to change the culture and perception of his organization. He also needed someone to teach the younger players the right way to play the game. Coach Dunlap is secure enough as a person that he is not worried about how he will be perceived around the league. He looked at his roster and realized that they would have to outwork and out hustle other teams because they have less talent than most teams. He has a plan and is sticking to it with the backing of MJ.

I loved reading this little tidbit out of Charlotte. A former St. John's fan from L.A. asked me what I thought Dunlap would do in Charlotte. My first thought was that he'd kill the players in practice. I too think MJ knew exactly who he was hiring and why. Pretty funny that the players were the last ones to figure it out.
