Interesting Article - UCLA Coaching Search

You were right MarkRedman, a good read indeed.

Interesting that they spoke to Calipari and he gave them terms. Did he use them or was he really interested?

Quite a few coaches allegedly accepted initially.

"Rebholz also described the school’s vetting of other candidates through the NCAA and an unnamed firm based in Atlanta. He said those efforts resulted in a list of coaches considered “untouchable” because of major NCAA violations, “infidelity, very low character, etc.”"

Pitino must have been one of those other candidates.

I would love for someone to do an in depth article on our coaching search.

I believe the interest between Cal and UCLA was legit. Of course it does not hurt that Cal got a new deal out of it with UK but come on, he was already the highest or close to the highest paid coach in the business at UK (depending on how much Mike K makes at Duke which is harder to know for sure since Duke is a private school not obligated to release his salary). He was making close to $10 mil a year and in zero danger of being fired. His name is mentioned with NBA jobs every year that doesn't mean he is looking to leverage that every year nor does it mean UK gave him a raise every time his name was mentioned for those jobs.

It's not always about the money. I think he had real interest in a new challenge. But in the end he felt most comfortable at Kentucky.

I know it isn't always about the money I was just surprised that Cal would have interest in the position considering what he has at Kentucky.

Wright quite simply has practiced what he preaches to his scholarship players, walk ons, student manager volunteers, and the student body at large: "Once you step foot on campus you become a Villanovan. Everything you do or say, on campus and off, even home with family or friends, reflects on Villanova. " He demands that his players treat everyone with the utmost of respect, and not to ever act or think that they are elite or better than anyone else.

I believe this is a lifelong job for him because he and Patti are Villanovans through and through. His hire wasn't pot luck for them. He was an assistant on Rollie's championship team. Patti was a Villanova cheerleader and Jay spent many weekends driving to nova from bucknell to date her.

An extraordinary coach and person who helped transform not only nova basketball , but nova itself. I once met Patty 5 years ago and asked her about Jay potentially leaving. She is every bit as warm and friendly as Jay, and she gave me a warm smirk that turned into a warm smile, and said in an inside way "Jay isn't going anywhere. We love it here."

Our envy at Nova's success with Jay is well founded. We had hoped Mullin could provide that here for a number of reasons. But it just didn't work out.

Hard to imagine CMA will work out that way for us, but hell, there's a building at College of Charleston with John Kress's name on it. If a New Yorker can become beloved and leave a legacy in a very southern city, why not CMA here.
