Wright quite simply has practiced what he preaches to his scholarship players, walk ons, student manager volunteers, and the student body at large: "Once you step foot on campus you become a Villanovan. Everything you do or say, on campus and off, even home with family or friends, reflects on Villanova. " He demands that his players treat everyone with the utmost of respect, and not to ever act or think that they are elite or better than anyone else.
I believe this is a lifelong job for him because he and Patti are Villanovans through and through. His hire wasn't pot luck for them. He was an assistant on Rollie's championship team. Patti was a Villanova cheerleader and Jay spent many weekends driving to nova from bucknell to date her.
An extraordinary coach and person who helped transform not only nova basketball , but nova itself. I once met Patty 5 years ago and asked her about Jay potentially leaving. She is every bit as warm and friendly as Jay, and she gave me a warm smirk that turned into a warm smile, and said in an inside way "Jay isn't going anywhere. We love it here."
Our envy at Nova's success with Jay is well founded. We had hoped Mullin could provide that here for a number of reasons. But it just didn't work out.
Hard to imagine CMA will work out that way for us, but hell, there's a building at College of Charleston with John Kress's name on it. If a New Yorker can become beloved and leave a legacy in a very southern city, why not CMA here.
