When you add Lovett and Owens as additional newcomers, you have to love the recruiting job that our staff has done to date

With just one senior on their roster, Bashir Ahmed provides an added dose of experience to a team that is trying to rebound from one of the worst seasons in program history.

Ahmed is built like a tight end, as he stands at 6’7″, 210 pounds. His power, strength and force gives him the ability to attack consistency on straight line drives and finish through contact in the paint. He can be a crafty finisher at the rim and has the potential to knock down shots consistently from the perimeter.

On defense, Ahmed is also a force. Because of his physical tools, he can match-up with numerous different positions and keep ball handlers in front of him. He tends to grab and foul, but trying to attack him off the dribble is like running into a brick wall.

In his last season at Hutchinson Community College, Ahmed was an NJCAA First Team All-American and was the Jayhawk Conference Most Valuable Player. The versatile forward averaged 20.1 points, 8.1 rebounds and dished out 2.2 assists per game, while shooting 45 percent from the field, 34 percent from beyond the arc and 75 percent from the free throw line.

Ahmed will be able to create mismatches at both the three and the four position. This will give St. John’s the opportunity to make more plays in transition and be more successful in year two of Chris Mullin’s space-and-pace system.

Beside Ahmed, SJU has an impressive list of Juco transfers - Berry, Thornton, Hatten, Hardy, Harvey, Goodwin, and going back some, Cecil Relliford, and Dennis McIntyre, to name those that I can recall. I'm sure I left out some good ones.

Thrilled with Ahmed's commitment and love his story, now let us see him do what he has to do on the court to be in the same category as the first 6 you Listed. They were all team Big East and some were All Americans. Bashir has a long way to go to get there. I like everyone hopes he does and does not become linked with James Scott who also came in very highly rated but underachieved.

Thrilled with Ahmed's commitment and love his story, now let us see him do what he has to do on the court to be in the same category as the first 6 you Listed. They were all team Big East and some were All Americans. Bashir has a long way to go to get there. Besides being able to get to the rim, he appears to be able to easily create good looks from mid range for himself. If he knocks those down consistently, he could average 18 points per game. So far, he does not seem interested in taking a lot of threes.....which is good. We have other players for that.

Def underachieved, but certainly not a bust. I liked Scott a lot and still don't know how he didn't perform better while here. Think he may have had a cup of coffee in the NBA.

Agree. May have had something to do with coaching. Great guy but not a successful coach.
