Sport Quotient Article - How Chris Mullin Can Reinvigorate St. John’s

Here's a decent article talking about some of the challenges ahead. Nothing new here, but the article does a good job of summarizing some of the struggles of the past and what can be done to elevate the program.

Winthrop Article - The Role of Alma Mater in Coach Selection and Performance – Men’s Basketball Article

Here's also a link in the aforementioned article, on whether men’s college basketball coaches perform better when coaching at their Alma Mater and the critical role recruitment plays. Let's just say, I'm glad we have Slice and Matt here.

"All-Americans that are the best players in college basketball and the other comprised of average basketball players the team with much more talent on its roster will perform much better than the average team. The head coach of a team cannot affect the level of talent that he has to work with (besides recruiting), he can only attempt to maximize the abilities of the team he has."

Butler got to 2 NCAA championship games with a bunch of 3-star kids. At the time, Gordon Hayward was their ony elite recruit.

Correction: Hayward was only a 3-star as well.

From my years of experience doing these kind of analyses, I'm guessing that there are more important variables to be examined especially in the current situation. For one, a former player's experiences as a young man who had to "make himself a basketball star" I would think, figure much more highly in determining how successful a coach will be. Also,I bet strength of character is a much higher variable in determining success than whether a coach is at his alma mater or not. After many years doing market research, I learned that results of a study don't often get to the "truth" of a matter unless the right variables are tested, and often it's the intangibles that determine success. Of course, I'm not a disinterested researcher. I believe Chris Mullin will become a legendary coach at St John's- much like Butch Kresse at Richmond.
