This team really reminds me why it's great to be a fan of this program, especially now. Being out manned by the major programs, with the big earning football programs and the fancy on campus arenas, and winning with a lot of skill, but even more effort and grit. Every player on this team brings maximum effort, every game. This whole season could have fallen apart, and no one could have blamed the players. Instead, 6 conference wins, the last 2 or 3 earned with all newcomers to the college basketball scene. Two players in Harrison and Harkless that are as good as any freshman we have had since Artest. Also a super athletic pair of wings and a better than expected combo guard. Then there is GG, never complaining, never giving up despite being outsized nearly every game.
Yet there is concern on the board. Players leaving the program, even before stepping foot on the court. Every player we targeted signing elsewhere. A coach competing not just against other programs, but the rumor mill as well.
I hate to sound like Donald Sutherland talking to Kevin Costner on that bench in D.C. in the movie JFK, but we are closer than you think. It may have been during the Duke game that the color guy (can't remember who) made a good point about SJU's needs. He said it seemed that the guys that were the toughest to get, namely Harkless and Harrison, were already here. What's left to do is get the final pieces. The point being that it's tough to recruit a future lottery pick, and a shooting guard with the overall talent, and swagger, of a player like Harrison. Point guard, a real skill position, is also covered starting next season. A pure shooter, even without major athleticism, and a big that can rebound and block shots, and we are top twenty-five material. To the doubters, we are closer than you think. I only hope this program can catch a break.
