How Administrative Spending Boosts College Costs

Schools have vastly improved ad increased administrative infrastructure since the early 90s, with more qualified personnel and more of them. The better ones understand responsiveness and customer service (viewing students and their families as customers). IMO St. John's is still mired in the days where you paid administration as little as possible, loading up with moms and dads who would take low paying jobs in order to get free tuition for their kids. I can't speak with certainty today, but in my dealings with the school trying to hire SJU grads or even making a donation, the lack of intelligent, timely response is startling.

Happy New Year Sal,

I've had just the opposite experience.

Have found people at St. John's to be extremely competent regarding a number of issues, particularly those in Red and White and Alumni Relations.

Had dinner last week with an alumnus (Class of 1984) and C.P.A. who is COO at a major company on Long Island. He has hired over 30 St. John's accounting grads over the years and has a great working relationship with the university.

All the best to you and your family for a spectacular 2013 !!!

In friendship, Kevin

Kevin,

Thanks for your response. I did qualify my impression as my own experience. In defense of the university, the major that I wish to hire from is new at the university, and while they did mention that I may find qualified applicants in another related major. However, they dropped the ball on both accounts, and did not follow up on my request for a curriculum for the major I was interested in hiring from. This was after several attempts on my part. The only subseuqent follow up after from the university that was to solicit a donation, with no mention of my attempts to establish a relationship with the university hire new grads and to provide internship opportunities for existing students.

I'm glad your experience has been better than mine, and perhaps mine, as anecdotal, was an outlier in terms of being a quality indicator of the university.

Kevin, it has been my pleasure to get to know you better this year, and wish you and you family good health and happiness in the year to come. Hope to see you at an upcoming game - perhaps at a pregame R&W.

Thanks,

Sal
