Hoops Weiss is correct that Mr. Howland may not survive long term as head men's basketball coach at UCLA.

I sure hope that Kyle Anderson and his Dad like any replacement for Mr. Holland.

Otis, I still maintain that Kyle made a mistake choosing UCLA stylisticly. That team is slow and runs purely half-court. Anderson is an excellent passer and floor leader, but he will make that team even slower. Kyle's strengths are magnified with a team that he can get the ball to on the break. Ucla in that style of offense desperately needed a PG like Artis with speed who can penetrate, Kyle, while an excellent player, is certainly not that guy. That team will be like molasses out there next season. I can't see a guy like Shabazz wanting to play that style of ball either.

I hope this becomes one of your recurring memes in the vein of such classics as "Mullin hasn't donated millions to St. John's" and "The Big East's fatal mistake was not inviting Penn State in"....

Because really, there is nothing more dignified than a grown man rubbing an 18-year-old's decision in his face just because he didn't choose his school.

Well done.

You can count on one hand the number of coaches that coached the Bruins to three consecutive Final Fours. Coach Howland is one of them. The Bruin fans make the St. John's fans look spectacular!

Actually, you can count them on 2 fingers. And you can leave out the word "consecutive.

In my opinion Howland made it big in Pitt because he capitalized and was the recipient of the Pitt scandal at st johns. The AAU and HS coaches were steering the ny kids away from st johns and Howland won the BE championship with nyc kids at least one or two of whom might have found there way to st johns absent the repercussions of the Pitt scandal. I also noticed Howland yelling and given instructions to his players yesterday while the st johns players were in the middle of free throw attempts. It just struck me as unprofessional for a coach and a dirty tactic. So glad UCLA lost :)

crgreen:
Do you think he'll get fired after this season? I think it's crazy that he would, but I have no insight into how UCLA operates.

Also, if Kyle isn't happy with what happens there, he can ask out of his LOI and go somewhere else without penalty, right? Depending on how the rest of UCLA's season goes, Seton Hall may find themselves with a nice March surprise.

I also don't think Shabazz or Parker go to UCLA.

That's quite an opinion considering Howland was at UCLA when Elijah was whipping out his, um, cell phone.

I just wanted to say that it's absolutely awesome to see you posting and that I hope you are doing well!

Didn't Howland go to UCLA in 03? That was the summer AFTER we won our NIT title therefore being the summer before the Pitt scandal. So clearly that's not the reason why. Slice was DOBO ar Pitt 99-01 then asst coach 01-06 so while Howland benefited a bit, it was mostly Jamie Dixon who rode the Slice wave. I'd say it was probably more Jarvis alienating the HS/AAU establishment then anything else the helped Howland.

Anyways, just my 2 cents but Howland's never really impressed me. He gets talent but doesn't seem he can make it work. UCLA is ripe for a switch. The need some fresh energy in there.

Very well said, and for my two cents, Otis appears to be much too intelligent to think a college decision should be based on basketball alone. KA will be successful on the court wherever he goes, in whatever system he plays in, he's that good.

I'll second that.
