One of the really nice things that many professional and college teams are doing is honoring a veteran during the game at halfcourt. As the individual's military service is recited on the PA system, all of us are given a few moments each game to reflect how these men and women voluntarily risk loss of limb and life to protect the freedoms we enjoy.
Our student section last night broke into a USA chant for the staff sergeant honored. It was really a nice moment, something that was dominant in the intimate confinces of CA, that would get lost at MSG. The sergeant engaged our student section, fist pumping.
It also made we wonder if we could do more. Maybe the entire student section at attention saluting the officer. Maybe t-shirts that say "SJU thanks our servicemen" unveiled for just those few moments of the game. Maybe a student chapter of wounded warriors could have tables set up in the arena, literally putting our money where our mouths are.
Wouldn't it be awesome if St. John's established scholarships specrfically for returning members of our military. It would be awesome to know the guy being honored at halfcourt was just given a shot at a free education at SJU - a small price consdiering what he/she risked for us.
Again, we have so much to be thankful for living in this imperfect country. Our servicemen hardly complain despite being deployed too many times to combat regions. Too many come home in pieces or in body bags. As a community, we can and should do more to help and recognize and help them upon their return.
