Hire Mike Rice

Hire Mike Rice. He is something this staff needs. Not only intensity, but also college coaching experience.. He worked wonders at Robert Morris with little talent. Something tells me that Mullin respects Rice's intensity.

Hire him understanding it will be his platform to gain a head coach job somewhere within 2 or so years, so be it. Hire him.

We already complain that the head coach takes a back seat to one of his assistants. Hard to imagine Rice sitting on the bench and letting Mullin run the show.

I wouldn't complain if the assistants were actually doing a good job coaching and showing improvement on the team... Have no problem with that principle, so long as the assistant coaches know how to coach. Not the case right now unfortunately.

Mike Rice was 16 and 38 in the Big East. Is there someone around who was 17 and 37 and wasn't fired for being a sociopath?

Btw, last night I got around to watching the LIU game on DVR. They did not look bad at all on the offensive end. They weren't perfect but neither were they terrible. The problem was on the defensive end. Also, I read so much criticism of Malik Ellison. I didn't see a mistake from him until the 4:04 mark of the 2nd half when he dribbled into a trap and threw the ball away. Then, near the very end of the game, he drove inside and made a weak pass in the lane that got stolen. What I saw was several excellent drives to the basket.

We still do not have good enough players to properly assess what kind of coach Chris Mullin and his staff are.
We have the worst front court in BE history. Seriously even Norm had Lamont Hamilton. Heck we could use Aaron Spears.

Norm Roberts?

He would have a field day with this team. Hell he could probably beat up everyone except Ahmed, Albimissthreesovich and Evander Holyfield. Everyone else on team would cower in fear of him.

In my opinion I don't think hiring another assistant coach is the issue here. Mullin and Richmond know basketball better than most. As Bill Parcells famously said, "It's not about the X's and O's it's about the Jim's and the Joe's". It's about the players. We need to recruit better players and the players we do have who have the potential to be very good Big East players are very young and need experience. right now we have Ponds, Lovett, Ahmed and Mussini who are Big East caliber players and we are bringing in three more next year. Yakwe, Freudenberg, Ellison, Owens and Williams can be good players but need to mature and most of all get more game experience. Mullin started from nothing, literally. we need to bring in more quality players who are Big East ready from the get go like Ponds , Ahmed and Lovett. It's not about the X's and O's it's about the Jim's and the Joe's.

How involved is Mitch Richmond.

Assistant coaches should be hungry and working with players nonstop. I do not see him living on campus helping players and watching film.

He needs to move back to the special assistant role.

You have to give him credit. Even with people wishing off his dick he is still persistent

A skilled BIG would make this team entirely different. We would have a good team that could compete and win on a regular basis. The way we play is being dictated by the fact that we have no one to go down low to.

I see your point, but if it was strictly about the players we may as well put Mike Maher on the bench and let our HoF coaches spend all their time with Matt on the recruiting front. Mike can wear himself out jumping out of his seat with his arms raised to the ceiling when ponds and crew hit their threes.

It takes top line players and excellent coaching to win at this level. Top talent can go to waste without excellent coaching. Coaching is much more of a factor than 5 or ten percent.

As others have expressed here, as a fan of the program, I the see improvement in the coaching this year with the exception of the del state no show - and they responded well to that lapse.

It's another year of growth for the team and a new staff.

Then why did Phil Jackson win championships with the Bulls where Doug Collins couldn't?

John Calapari is not known as a great coach when comes to X's and O's. He wins because almost every Kid on his team is a top 20 Kid. He doesn't need to be a great tactician when he's bringing in that kind of talent year in and year out.

So all we have to do is equal Kentucky in recruiting and we should win. ;)
