In the below linked article sports writer Jeff Goodman shares his thoughts about candidates for the St. John's coaching gig. He lists a number of the regularly cited names and a few not mentions often (James Jones @ Yale and Mike Rhodes @VCU).

Who does Goodman think is the best candidate for the StJohn's vacancy ?
Bobby Hurley – He’s the ideal pick, but I don’t think Cragg winds up getting him to leave Arizona State.

Who does Goodman think St. John's ends up hiring ?
Ryan Odom – This is just a complete guess, but I think Cragg will want a young up-and-comer — and Odom is just that.

I wish someone would pay me to make guesses

If Bobby is Plan A, would be very supportive are diligencing coaches like Odom, Earl Grant, Mike Rhoades, etc. as part of Plan B. Younger coaches that have largely (1) been around winning programs as assistants, and (2) have HC experience/success, specifically with regard to taking lesser programs that may have some of their own limitations or infrastructure challenges (as compared to P5 schools) to an NCAAT.

For me latter in particular speaks volumes for SJU candidacy. Know SJU has made progress in terms of facilities and resources, but concern for me is if candidate only/primarily has experience where everything is first class and resources are effectively limitless, even if they think they can handle the challenges at SJU they actually have no idea and eventually get worn down by the grind being far more difficult than they signed up for.

Someone like Odom coming from UMBC likely knows how to grind, and SJU could even be a step up in terms of resources available. Has also seen what Virginia Tech has so he knows what's out there from a room for improvement standpoint.

Think this is a key consideration very specific to SJU job. One thing to be eyes wide open to challenges at SJU, another to have experience dealing with similar elsewhere and succeeding regardless. Conditioned as opposed to thinking/hoping you can hang.

Ryan Odom, UMBC

Odom has the bloodlines, and now he has the resume. The son of former Wake Forest coach Dave Odom turned the UMBC program around in just two years, pulling off the unthinkable by beating Virginia in the first round to become the first No. 16 seed to upset a No. 1 in NCAA Tournament history. Odom turned down a couple mid-majors after the win over Virginia, and should remain a hot name this coming offseason.

Record
67–36

Oh snap! It was UMBC team that I remember watching that I was so impressed with. LOL

Honestly aside from Rick P, Odom would be my second choice. Shoot, I think at this point I'd be ok with Scheyer if Hsu and Borman were on his staff.
He's be outstanding...but his heart is south of the Mason-Dixon line.
His heart might be in Queens after he saw the $$ we were willing to throw at Porter Moser.
Like Moser, would we be talking about Odom if he didn't have a historic upset?
I like him. His historic upset of Virginia aside, he's won 20 games all 3 seasons he's been at UMBC, and he's got good coaching bloodlines with his dad being Dave Odom. He's also young, and seems to be on the rise. At this point in the search he's about as good as it's going to get. He's only making 425K a year at UMBC, so if they offer him the same deal they offered Moser they are effectively quintupling his salary. Hopefully he likes money.

Source confirms St. John's reached out to UMBC on Tuesday to speak to Ryan Odom. Has a small buyout, at $250,000. #sjubb

Very underwhelming imho.
Complete outsider.
Had one shining moment in one game.
Has a record that blows no one away.
Unfair, but sounds like Keno Davis 2.0.

If Bean Counter Bobby and his sidekick haven't gone into witness protection, this guy automatically moves to the front of the line.
