Incredibly, Berra was part of the D-Day invasion of Normandy, 71 years ago last Saturday. When asked if he was afraid of getting shot storming the beach, he said, "No. I was afraid of drowning." Under the cover of the moonless sky, soldiers disermbarking transport vessels with 60-80 lbs of gear in had no idea how deep the water was. Many did drown.

A true American hero, an icon for Italian Americans, the pride of St Louis, and an adopted son of NYC, the Bronx, and New Jersey, Berra is a national treasure.
