The Ivies have adopted the Ivy Index which governs admission for recruited athletes. The 2 Ivies with which I am familiar provide their coaches with a set number of "academic preferences" which the coach enjoys. The number of preferences differ from sport to sport and school to school. I am told that the coaches at Dartmouth generally have the least flexibility. An academic preference does not allow a recruited athlete to be admitted but merely allows the Admissions Officer some flexibility to read the application in as favorable light as possible but in any event the recruited athletes for a particular team is suppose to reflect the school's overall academic profile.
Ironically a coach at Stanford who recruited in a non revenue sport against the Ivy school told me that in his opinion the Haaavard coach had the greatest flexibility in admissions of the all Ivies.
Below is a reasonable explanation of the "Ivy Index".
