Harrison's "Rivalry" Comments

Well, you can't blame the Cuse fans for feeling that way. Your rival has to win a few games to make it a "rivalry." I think we're 1-13 against Cuse in the last decade. Hopefully this year that changes. We came close last year.

I'm not sure what to make of Seton Hall this season. Auda's late decision not to return was a big blow, IMO, as he brought maturity and experience to their frontcourt. But as I mentioned on another thread: I don’t like the dismissive tone about Seton Hall. We are 3-1 against them over Harrison's time. The loss was by 30 points. Last year's victories were by one point apiece and easily could have gone their way. Whitehead, Delgado, Carrington will be very interesting to watch. They have Sterling Gibbs coming back, he's solid. And Mobley's decent. I still expect us to beat them on the season opener, just wouldn't be cavalier about it.

St. Johns should never regard Seton Hole as a rival. However the team has not yet returned to "rival" status with respect to Syracuse. Cuse is ranked every year and is a perennial top 10 team. The Johnnies need to be ranked with some consistency and actually beat the Orange in order to renew that rivalry

Now that they are out of the conference, there will never be a real rivalry with Cuse. The party's over.

Agree. The best possible thing that could happen to the new Big East is to have a competitive rivalry between SJU and Georgetown and for both to make noise in the Tourney on a consistent basis.

To be fair, if you asked Seton Hall who their rival is they would answer Rutgers. I hope as time goes by, St. John's and Seton hall make it back to the national scene, it wasn't too far back when Sealy and DeHere were leading their respective schools to 20+ wins.

I think they view (or used to view) Rutgers more as their "in-state rival" along with us as a conference rival. Even if they do claim Rutgers is their rival, they still want to beat us probably more than any other team they play on a regular basis. Just look at how bad they want to beat us at volleyball lol

Look at cincy and xavier, doesnt have to be a conference affiliation that makes for a rivalry. Two things have to happen, we need to play them every year and, more importantly, becoming competitive with them.

Cinci and X, being in the same city, makes that rivalry what it is. While Cuse claims to be NY's team, the geographic distance, combined with their recent dominance over us makes it not a rivalry. Because we are not going to have those frequent head to head matchups, it will never be what it was.

I can tell you that the last time we beat Duke at the Garden, the Duke alum who came to the game with me could not care less about an out of conference loss to a mediocre program. That's what we will be to Cuse going forward. If we are able to become a consistent winner and keep them from raiding the NY/NJ talent pool, then maybe.

What makes you sure we wont play them every year?

I'm not "sure" but it is rare that any two teams from different conferences play each other every year. If we do, and we start beating them, then I could be wrong.

Yup, gotta beat em.

All this rivalry talk is nonsense until we regain a consistent level of play and respectability. We have become somewhat irrelevant and doubt many teams need or want to develop a "rivalry" with us. Let's get back on a winning track with an impressive season & go from there. Obviously winning cures a lot of problems & directly effects recruiting, attendance and national attention. We will never again run with the Dukes, Kansas, Kentucky, etc., but I think we should aspire to be a consistent program for most part like Nova, Marquette, Georgetown & Xavier. To me if we make the NCAA tourney more often than not & make some noise now and then, most of us will be proud of SJU & happy.

He tells Zach Braziller that Syracuse is our rival, not Seton Hall. Naturally this caught the attention of some Syracuse fans. Interesting as to what others think, I say lets just beat them both this year and that will be good enough for me.

What I think is that D;Angelo Hartison is one of the toughest mothers who ever put on a Johnnie's uniform. They could have beaten us 13 of 14 times, but Dlo would rather face Syracuse and give it his 150% in a loss than to gut one out vs. Seton Hall. He knows where this program should be, and aspires to that. He's one tough dude - like a boxer going up against Ali, he could get battered for 15 rounds, refuse to go down, and lose - BUT would rather be in a ring vs. the champ, than beating up on some lower rung guy. It sounds like false bravado or out of touch by Harrison, but he is as much a warrior as exists in D1 - I know where he is coming from, and I applaud him for his sentiment.

Well said Beast. While we are on the topic, it was only a matter of time before SHU fans got into a hissy fit. Look at some of their comments, pretty fun how angry some of them get.

Well it's a distraction for Harrison to name another mediocre team - SHU - whose programs is improving leaps and bounds. That's a distraction - so what if their 100 fans get upset at our 100 fans. :)

I love this kid! Hits a big shot and then pops the St. John's on the front of his jersey or points to it. With everything this kid has been through, you know he loves St. John's and really gives a crap. One of my all time favorites. He needs to get to the big dance this year and make some noise. He really deserves it.
