Harrison and Sampson to return to St. John's

"making a run at a tournament bid"

id prefer it to say "making a run in the tournament"

I really think were gonna turn some heads next season.

Haha yeah. We made a run at a tourney bid this past year. Who knows, maybe we could have slid in if DLo didn't get suspended and Branch never got injured.

with a roster consisting of Jordan, Harrison, Greene, Branch, Sampson, Pointer, Obekpa, Sanchez I think we have a stellar rotation. I don't like any more than a 9 man rotation which means Gift, Balamou and Bourgault may have to battle for the last PT spot. With the returnees, Jordan's commitment and Sanchez ruling, we now have all the elements to make up a top 15 team. Playmaking from the point. A pure scoring SG. Athleticism on the wings. 3-NBA caliber front court players (Jakarr, Obekpa, Sanchez). Nothing should hold this team back from being major contenders next year

True that if those 8 average 25 minutes each that's a rotation. Obviously injuries, foul trouble and other situational substitutions should find a little time for the other 5, including potentially Hooper and Jones, to get some play as well. I think of those 5 Gift is the one that will be the 9th. Your list has 4 guards and 3 forwards, Gift should be backup center though I have no doubt that Sanchez will play there at times as well.

still have no one that can hit from outside with any reliability...I would agree if we had a shooter, or maybe two who can hit the 3..fact of the matter is we do not have anyone who can do it on a regular basis, we dont have an offense that can set the big screens to free up those non existant shooters...can you say defenses will pack th paint..

DLO was double teamed last year . Next year teams wont have that luxury. If DLO has better shot selection his % will improve.

Exactly right. He isn't athletic enough to best players off the dribble, hopefully like Dwight Hardy he will develop that skill despite being handicapped by lack of speed and quickness. With Jordan able to get into the paint and getting Sanchez touches inside, we will find open shots outside in halfcourt sets. Should help our offense tremendously.

If we press like Louisville then there will be more minutes to go around. Gift will be in a 10-12 minute guy and more on nights he's on or the situation calls for it. Balamou will really have to compete with some good guards, but he has a lot to offer if we press. This is still not a good jump shooting team, so there is still a need for Marco.

I think the biggest improvement will come in areas it's easy to overlook. Experience will breed better ball movement, better rotations on defense, guys will move without the ball better, set harder screens, etc. Who really learns how to move without the ball and keep your spacing on the court in HS ball? Not many.

I think some of our guys (like Dom) started to pickup on those little intricacies this past season, and I expect we'll only get better in those areas. Little things can add up to a lot of points over the course of a game.

Conversely, I think we overrate how much muscle a guy can put on in one summer, or how much his shooting can improve in that same 3 month period.

I agree about Sir Dom. He is a terrific athlete, who, if he learns to play under control, can be an all conference player by his senior year.
The trip to Europe is just what this team needs to gauge the best lineups for November. Players like Sanchez, Hooper and Harrison will have a chance to show their value against good Euro competition.
I still think one more ride will open up by next month.

I'm with you '72, I think another ride opens up eventually. And my hope is that guys earn their spots in the rotation on that Euro trip. No preconceived notions of who deserves what, just let them play, and whoever earns it goes into fall practices penciled in as the starter. I think the backcourt could really be up for grabs.

Steve Lavin has assembled a LOADED roster at St. John's. Red Storm will have the most talented team heading into the new Big East in 13-14.

Vander Blue's decision to leave Marquette makes St. John's one of the favorites heading into the Big East next year. Gtown, Nova in mix too.

There's going to be a good deal of hype surrounding this team by the time they roll the balls out in the fall.

We have no crutches left. We have experience and depth, two things that we have badly needed. Top 25 preseason is something that is definitely on the table with this roster.

I think we should play as a top 25 team from the get-go. I'm not sure the voters will respect as a top 25 team from the beginning. Because we've been down for the vast majority of the last ten years, we're going to have to earn the respect of the voters.

I just hope we are clicking from the beginning and we don't have any slip-ups against inferior competition. That might be a challenge if the coaches are mixing and matching pieces as we expect will happen.

When Lavin was hired, he said he needed horses. Well, he's got them. And now he has to coach them.

The PG position will be the key. We need smarts at PG like what Hardy brought to the table. This cannot be a disjointed freelancing session on offense. He needs to install legitimate playsets and leave it up to the talented players to execute.

If Jordan is the penetrating and passing (kick outs) he is touted to be than Dlo can set up at the 3 pt line and take 20 footers instead of 30 footers which theoretically should improve his 3 pt %.
