I have a tradition in the digital age of trying to shut myself off from the internet and spend as much of my time spending time with my family during their winter break, reflecting on the past year and setting goals for the coming year. My wife(a teacher) and my high school son and daughter should all be home by 5pm tonight so I decided to make this my last post of 2018. I may attend the Sacred Heart game on Saturday and am strongly considering a family trip down to the Prudential Center on the 29th so I will check to see who is attending that game.
This has been a very interesting year to be a St. John’s basketball fan and a poster on this venerable site. If you can erase January of 2018 from your memory, the team is 17-4 since the win against Duke in early February. I give credit to Coach Mullin and his staff but don’t want to start a war as the year comes to an end so I hope that all of you can find a few minutes in your heart to accept this acknowledgment. As I reflect on the past year, it is Shamorie Ponds that stands out. In the 35 plus years that I have followed the program he is emerging as a player that will go down as an all time great. We likely will have him for a few months so try to enjoy his play as much as you can. 2018 also brought us two dynamic players in Heron and Figueroa that no one could have predicted would be part of our team after last season ended against Xavier. Maybe Paultzman and a few others with regard to Heron but certainly not both.
The year was also special to me as I got to meet a number of posters at a St. John’s baseball game. This was MJ Maher and much of his crew. I would list them all but I don’t want to leave any of them out. It was an honor to meet NYC Redmen that day because all of his are so thankful for the fantastic pictures that he posts on a regular basis. However the highlight of that day and something I may never forget was when Mike’s friend Ralph stated loudly that no one ever hits a home run at Jack Kaiser Stadium and the next two St. John’s batters both went deep to left field and then dead center. I also want to thank Ghostzapper for introducing himself to me at the Princeton game and his kind words. Finally on the thank you’s JSJ for giving me center court tickets for my son and I against Marquette. I still hope to meet him to thank him in person and to Paul Massell to whom I promise to make another donation to the site in the New Year. I spend more time on here then I do on Netflix so this site is certainly worth more then $10.99 a month to me.
As for posters this appears to be the year of the end of Fun’s run, the confirmation and regular return of Jack Williams. More posts from MJ Dinkins and Marillac who I don’t believe particularly like me but that’s ok they are both cool to me. There is the ongoing war between Class of 72 and Beast of the East and the recent one between Logen and WASJU which I hope to think are in Jest. There was also the return and banishment of Mike “medium” T Shirt” Zaun. I wish him well and maybe he will return again. Finally a couple of posters that don’t always get the publicity of some others but stand out to me which include the General and Indyredman(because I don’t know anyone else who lives there who is not attending IU)
As a relative newcomer to the site I don’t have the history of many posters and through a couple of topics I learned a lot about the past going back to dial up Modems and Big East briefs.
To the majority of the posters that celebrate, Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all.
Hoping we will cut down the nets at the BET and hear our name called on selection Sunday!
