Some posters here in past years would wish "C'entanni" to Coach on his birthday.   You guys have pull!

My daughter has a birthday tomorrow.   About 10 years ago at at a reception celebrating 25 years since the final four team I introduced her to coach and added, "The two of you having something in common - you share a birthday"   Coach smiled broadly, then pronounced her name as it would be in Italian, complimenting what a beautiful name it is.   He then engaged her with his full attention for about 10 minutes, peppering her with graceful questions, as if she was the important person he wanted to know everything about.

I suppose great ambassadors do that sort of thing, making those around them feel like they are special to him.

I warmly think of the words to a Sinatra song.   "It was a very good year"

But now the days are short
I'm in the autumn of the year
And now I think of my life as vintage wine
From fine old kegs
From the brim to the dregs
It poured sweet and clear
It was a very good year.

Happy birthday coach.    You are at once blessed and a blessing.

Happy Birthday Coach! You are such a class act and a wonderful person. I'll forever treasure the short time we met on campus and how you chatted with me in such a way that you made me feel so comfortable. Stay safe!

Happy birthday coach. Thank you for all the wonderful years you gave to St Johns . I especially remember when Mike Jarvis pulled out of  meeting with the Redmen.com group and  you  very gracefully met with us for a cookout .

Only Lou could come  up with " I shoulda played ya more ."  What a great thing to say to former players !  It had to make them all feel good .

Happy birthday, Lou Carnesecca, 96 years young today. First time I met him I told him I’d attended the Carnesecca/Saracek camp years earlier and felt compelled to add, “I wasn’t a great player.” He laughed and assured me, “I know. If you were, I’d remember you.”

When I think about Looie, I think about the early days of the Big East and how it has evolved through the years. It was (and still is) one of the premier leagues in the NCAA. The games are generally hard fought and very competitive with lots of great rivalries. The league has produced it's share of star players, nationally ranked teams and NCAA champions. When the football schools left the "old" Big East, we were very fortunate to add several highly competitive programs in the midwest to keep the caliber of league play at a very high level.

One thing that I really miss is that the "old" Big East was often thought of as a "coaches" league. Watching "characters" like Looie, Big John Thompson, Rollie, Boeheim, PJ, Raferty, Pitino, etc. in action on the sidelines was almost as entertaining as watching the games themselves. Great memories that will stay with me for my lifetime.

Thanks, Coach, for helping me develop a love for St John's University and the game of basketball. Please know that you have touched the lives of so many people in so many ways.
