Not only an excellent coach at St. Anthony's high school but a bull on the court at St.John's. Gus was a powerful driver to the basket with a good pull up jump shot. Was part of an undefeated freshmen team - Seiden, Roethel, Paschal, and Engert. Fun to watch.

Was at The HOF Dinner at Crest Hollow last evening. Over 400 people attended.

It was great to see Gus with all his former players...Ken Atkinson, Ken Rood and Tommy Hicks among them.

Master of Ceremony, Alan Hahn (ESPN Radio NY) said the reason he went to St. Anthony's was because of Gus

Rob Scuderi of The L.A. Kings was also inducted. He is Billy Schaefer's son in law.

Mr. Alfieri taught American history at my high school. Attached is his 1974 Hicksville High School year book picture. I was not aware at the time of his success at St. Johns and he didn't mention it.

Interesting article in my opinion authored by a friend, frequent MSG Section 114 visitor & SJU grad, David Russell. (No not that DR lol)

Alfieri would like to see a statue of Lapchick, who won 334 games at St. John’s in two stints from 1936-1965, in front of Carnesecca Arena. The school site posted in December 2013 that the statue would be unveiled in a ceremony scheduled tentatively for spring 2014, but it hasn’t happened yet. According to Alfieri, the statue has been built but is currently in a New Jersey warehouse. Alfieri wonders, “Why don’t we put it there where it belongs instead of sticking it where no one can see it?”

The easy answer to Gus's question is because WE ARE, ST. JOHN'S!

It is my understanding that that the Board of Trustees is holding it up because some of the members believe that statue should honor Father Harrington, not someone they never heard of.

Will that statue have him holding his hand out with a watch in it?

Was at Gus's camp on Thursday at Our Lady of Mercy Academy in Syosset.

Guest speaker was Net coach Ken Atkinson, who played for Gus at St. Anthony's High School

This is Gus's 48th year "running" the camp.

Gus will be inducted into The NYC Basketball Hall of Fame on September 12 at The NYAC.

If anyone is interested in obtaining Gus Alfieri's new book, The Heart of a Champion, signed copies will be available at The Book Review Store in Huntington, N.Y.

Attended tonight's book revue and Gus read one passage from the book about someone maintaining that one of the most important things Gus did was a maniacal demand that his players and teams played great defense. Something we could use in our program. Hope St. Jean or whoever is up to the task.
