Visiited with Gus, one of the top 50 players in school history, today at his Basketball camp in Kings Park, Long Island.

It's his 47th year hosting the camp, which may be the longest run by any individual in the country.

For those not aware, Gus (Class of 1959) was a starter on the 1958-59 team which won the Holiday Festival and NIT, when both were big time tournaments.

The great Tony Jackson was also on that squad that was coached by HOFer Joe Lapchick.

Not to forget the late, great Alan Seiden, his backcourt buddy.

My bad!

50 lashes with a wet noodle !!!

Alan was also a Top 50 player, as was Tony.

He also was a consensus Second-Team All-American in 1959 and won The Haggerty Award the same year.

Lou Roethel and Rich Engert (who recently turned 80) rounded out the starting 5.

Interesting to note that Lou and Rich were both Math majors and Rich was elected a member the prestigious Skull and Circle Society.

Gus, Lou and Rich all spent their career's as teachers.

Lou started the basketball program at Nassau Community College, where he also taught.

Was also the basketball head coach at St. Anthony's Smithtown (Kings Park) and for awhile at its current location in South Huntington. Also an author who wrote about Joe Lapchick and St. John's.

Gus is in the process of having another book published about his 1973-74 St. Anthony's team, the best team he has said he ever coached.

The team won a NY State Championship and according to Gus is the best scholastic team Long Island ever produced.

At one point, Gus's team's won 49 straight games vs Catholic school competition.

The book was a very good read and touched on a lot of interesting topics, particularly the early days of professional basketball and the integration of the NBA.

You can pick up a used copy of the book on amazon.com for about four dollars including shipping. It's well worth reading for all Redmen fans.
