Had luch with former Redmen basketball star Gus Alfieri (Class of 1959) last week at his basketball camp at Our Lady of Mercy of Academy on Long Island.

Gus is now in his 45th year running the camp.

That said, Gus will be hosting a 4 session Coaching Clinic on Long Island this September.

Details will be forthcoming.

Gus, as many of you know, won several New York State basketball championships while coach of St. Anthony's H.S. (Long Island) back in the 1970's-1980's.

Good guy and an excellent coach
However, he used his camp to pry kids from public schools to go to St Anthony's
As a former coach in the area, I would cringe whenever a good young talented kid from our school went to his camp
We never knew if we would see the kid again in the fall

Unfortunately, this is a common practice among private hs coaches who run camps and who coach AAU. The use aau (and camps) to find the best players, then work on them to transfer. St. John the Baptist girls was perennially near the bottom of the CHSAA until Ted Oberg took over. Before long he had a roster of young guns (who made those squads as 8th graders in public school), and sjb was one of the best teams in NYS.

I agree with you on both accounts. Alfieri is a great guy, and poaching kids via your camp is low.

I used to hate Gus & St. Anthony's when I was going to St. Dominic's but I loved his book on Joe Lapchick.

BTW isn't Reggie Carter's son at St. Anthony's? Is he a prospect?

Not sure if Nigel Carter graduated this past year or if he is still at St. Anthony's.

When Nick Carter was a senior, I remember a poster said something to the effect that Coach Lou told him [the poster] that there'd be a spot for Nick at St. John's if he wanted to come, but a different level would probably be better for him.

I assume the same was/would be said about Nigel.

 Never will forget the first class of Freshmen Speech. Gus walks in late and sits in the front center seat and immediately asked Dr. Joyce, "What his name was?" The class broke out in laughter since the prof had written his name full blown on the board. Was a good friend in Smithtown.
