Agree on the post game party at Fox, best post game crowd I have seen
in at least 10 years.
Lots of fun, Mel Davis and Billy Schaeffer were great.
Very upbeat about the future.

I remember thinking after seeing him shooting real close-up, from the deep corner, that Billy Schaefer had one of the sweetest jump shots I had ever seen.

Mel was a beast on the boards until Oral Roberts said a prayer for his injured knee at the NIT
Had he not been injured, Mel would have had an even better career in the NBA
Schaefer from the corner was money in the bank
I often wonder how well that team would have done at St John's had Looie coached them in their last season
 
Chatted w Mel after some Alumni photos & he said in 74 his rookie yr w the knicks his roomate was the
Capt Willis Reed how cool was that???

Told him how I met Earl the Pearl Monroe at free signing near NYU & was the sweetest man
He said Earl is his daughters Godfather cool
 
Billy Shaeffer said "Ernie Digregorio was the best college player he faced at st.j's"

Also said "Providence was the hated rival w Joe Mullaney coaching who recruited him"

And he was as ineffective and useless (other than for bilking old ladies out of their life savings, that is) as usual. What a fraud! If I were Mel Davis, I wouldn't have wanted him within 50 feet of me.
 
I don't think Louie actually ever coached either Schaeffer or Davis. My recollection was he left for Nets job after their freshman year. Frosh could not play varsity ball in those days. It seemed all our players then came from the CHSAA or PSAL. Twenty wins and post-season were a given .

you a correct indeed both were Recruited by LouC played freshman ball & were ranked top 5 frosh team in country
Frank mulzuf was their coach the next 3 yrs n did a great job winning 20 plus w them
