Grant is certainly trying to reverse the tide for millions of kids who not only put basketball ahead of academics, but have paid so little attention to academics that even a shot at college did not provide an education. Considering those who went to college to play bball are the lucky ones, this is a huge problem that no one is seriously addressing. If the NCAA had the same rules as Grant's organization for student athletes, we'd have a true student-athlete model. Beyond that, we'd have athletes who were using their athletic ability to get real educations, not simply play the equivalent of minor league basketball with academics as an afterhought.
Fail to make the NBA while failing to get an education, and your basketball career is little more than your claim to fame, whether you scored 15 a game at St John's, your high school, or was king of your schoolyard.
Good job by Grant. It would be great if some big money donors were playing attention and signed on to expand the footprint of this worthy cause.
