Great Nick Rutherford Article

Thanks for posting my article!

He reached out to me and we had a great conversation. He was ready to graduate until his parents told him to continue playing.

He lost a lot of games at FAU and then transferred to Monmouth and they started the season 0-12.

I do believe he can play overseas at some level. His defense and energy can take him places!

He is right. Absolutely nobody wants to play St. johns. You could see that in Jay Wrights post game interview after the second villanova game. Although we lost, they were totally flustered on offense and jay wright couldnt get off the court fast enough.

St johns will be one of the top teams in the big east next year and has as good a shot as any to win it.

Thank you Nick. He is the best defensive player I have seen on college in some time. An absolute terror as an on ball defender. It was fun to watch.

At one point in the article he called the Big East the toughest conference in college basketball after saying he didn't see much difference between the level of play at our level and the MAAC or Conference USA. Find this odd.

great representative...

caught me by surprise at the end, nothing he's married with a child. Probably made it even tougher decision to stay in college for a year with no income. Can't imagine that type of pressure.

It is a weird comment to compare the Big East to the MAAC and say the level of competition is comparable. It's kind of a silly thing to say, but that attitude is just what a guy needs who is stepping up from a mid major conference to the Big East.

Saying no one wants to play St. John's I would say is only mildly true. We won 5 of 18 conference games, but I do believe that comment by Rutherford is just parroting what Anderson has said all along. Namely, we are going to play so hard, the other team is going to want to quit and go home, 40 minutes of hell and all that stuff.

In terms of his prospect of playing overseas, just about any D1 player can find a place to play professionally somewhere in the world. Phil Missere walked on at St. John's and playing at the right level in the UK, he actually became a league MVP. If Rutherford wants to keep playing, that door will be open for him.

He was fearless taking the ball to the hoop, and truth be told made better decisions of when to go to the hole than Ponds did during the second half of last season. Proved the old theorem that anyone can play great defense, and that it all starts with desire and hard work.

But Beast don’t you agree as the season progressed and our play improved, teams would not want to take a chance against. Not only was and is our style of play difficult to prepare for, but in the final weeks of the season, we were implementing that style much better.

Agree. But we didn't start ripping wins. I think we won 4 out of last 11, not exactly world beaters. I think the truth is that no one likes to play a team that works so hard on defense. Better teams outscored us but we made them work hard to do it for the most part.
I think opposing coaches warned their guys not to take us lightly, and rightly so. That's not exactly same as not wanting to play us.

Bottom line: with out talent, and the injury to Heron, we did about as well as could be expected, and were a much better team at the end than the beginning. All you can ask of a team and its coach.

As far as our record being what was expected, I'll agree I would have predicted about 16 regular season wins. Having said that, if you told me Heron would miss 1/3 of our season and both he and Figgy have somewhat down years compared to 2018-2019 I would never have expected to finish above .500 so I think Coach and the rest of the team over achieved. That makes me feel very optimistic going forward.

Rankings, statistics, etc fail to measure heart, hustle, maturity, focus and intensity - that's where Nick excels. Also his height was nice plus in the backcourt. Well done, Nick. All the best.

Nick Rutherford is a smart, focused and classy young man who will be successful on and off of the basketball court. I would love to see CMA or AD Cragg offer Nick a job at St. John’s

Quick question .... who and when was the last married player on StJ’s men’s basketball team before Nick ? It may go back decades.

If I remember the ESPN doc " The Season" correctly, i think Anthony Glover's fiancee/wife was interviewed at their apartment with their child.

ron artest had a child in may of his senior year of high school. I dont know if/when ron ron married.

I don’t doubt that a lot of players have fathered children but I wouldn’t be surprised if there hasn’t been a married player in decades.

National statistics indicted the percentage of people getting married is down and in particular down among those under age 25.
