grading new head coaching hires

Jeff Goodman of ESPN recently graded all of the new coaching hires in college basketball. This is what he said about SJU:

St. John's Red Storm: Chris Mullin

Career record: 0-0

I'm all for reconnecting with the glory days of the Johnnies, but last time I checked, Mullin had never coached. Maybe he'll be Fred Hoiberg, but I'm not sold. I think it depends on the quality of Mullin's staff and whether his staff can help get him players. So, this one might be altered after I see his complete coaching staff. But for now, it's a C.

Grade:C

Ass chin aside, his assessment is a fair one. I believe the staff will get Mullin the players he needs, but I'm biased.

i think for the casual college bb fan, this is a fair assessment - the posters here follow everything SJU from soup to nuts - recruits, current players tweets etc - we know the juice that Coach Mullin has brought here is long, long overdue to our starved fan base, but to an outsider, which is 99.9 % of college bball fans this is a fair assessment.

You can say Hoiberg but you can also point to Clyde Drexler.

Ipersonally think Chris Mullin will be an astounding success, but we will have to let the results speak when they happen

0-0 beats whatever Norm's record was at Queens College.
Wasn't like 20-82 or something

If Goodman was a writer when Chris was a student, he would have been a doubter then too. A kid who couldn't jump was slow a foot. Chris will coach like he played, with intensity, heart of a lion, and an eye of an assassin.

Grading new coaching hires is downright stupid
What kind of grade do you think Hoiberg would have gotten?
I think he's proven that he's a whole lot better than expected
Here's hoping that the same will be the case with Mullin

It's a fair grade. Sure, Mullin is putting a hell of a staff together and has already offered a bunch of local players. But the fact remains nobody has ever seen him coach and we really won't know what he's got until the season starts. Could very well be Fred Hoiberg or could end being Clyde Drexler. Impossible to predict, but all I will say is he's really impressed me so far.

That's an intriguing question you posed. Jeff Goodman has been rating coaching hires for years (in past gig's FOX, CBS, and now ESPN) so I looked up the article from 2010. Fred Hoiberg got a C, below is the link to the full article and Iowa State piece. It's also interesting looking back at his grades as 2010 was an eventful year. Lavin got a B-, Williard at the Hall got A-, Fran Mcaffery C+, Tim Cluess C+, Tom Pecora B, Steve Donahue at BC B-.

So basically I'd rather have a C in his book than a B or an A.

IOWA STATE

The Old: Greg McDermott
The New: Fred Hoiberg

Oh, boy. I’ve heard good things about Hoiberg, but I’m always weary of an NBA guy making the transition to the college ranks, especially one who hasn’t coached a game at any level. Thankfully, he retained assistant T.J. Otzelberger — one of the top young recruiters in the business — but he takes over a difficult situation.

Grade: C
