Gottlieb's Stupid Quote

Just prior to appearing on CBS' pre game show, Gottlieb was quoted as saying, he would be able to give the show a "white man's perspective". Once on the show he proceeded to pick Miami over Marquette by a sizeable margin. Goes to show you what an idiot this guy is, but we knew that already.

SI today named it the third worst college basketball announcer gaffe ever. #1 on the list indirectly involved St. John's:

Gottlieb still has a ways to go to catch up to Billy Packer.

Why is what Doug said a gaffe??
Is he not a white man? Does he not have the perspective of a guy who honed his basketball skill in an all white suburban setting at the country club basketball court? I truly believe his perspective would be influenced by that background as opposed to that of Sir Charles.
It's not like he said something offensive like the NBA should speed up the importation of European players to further integrate the NBA because 78% of the players are African-American while only constituting 13.6% of the US population!
After all the NBA players association has been very vociferous about adding more "black" coaches. That there are 13 black coaches (43%) out of 30 head coaches is obviously not enough! Is the NBA players association, by extension, implying that black players would be better served by coaches of their own race? That would be rascism.
I, for one, defend Gottlieb in that his background has stifled his goal to some day play in the NBA and that he and his ilk have been pushed to other occupations that Jewish males dominate in America like medicine and the law.
What a country have we become when all that a white man can aspire to is to become a doctor or lawyer?
As we know here on redmen, our most knowledgeable poster on all things basketball (and SJ), was forced to abandon his dream of playing at St. John's and the ABA and, instead, attend Law school, and to make matters worse, was forced to play in a band for extra income!!!
I am happy that Sir Charles has come to Doug's defense and made crystal to racist America that Doug was merely making FUN when addressing himself as a "white guy".
Wink!

Because his opinion should be from a basketball perspective, not a race or ethnicity perspective.

No one should be surprised though. Gottlieb has always been an idiot and this just par for the course.

Pretty much all my friends are Asian. We all say stupid shit about my whiteness all the time, and no one is offended. I think race jokes as opposed to racist jokes are fine, but you need to know the right time to deliver them. Gottlieb's joke wouldn't have gone over like a lead balloon if one of the black hosts followed up with some sort of joke, but that didn't happen. I hate Gottlieb, but the media seems to be blowing this up too much.

Those on this board who know me know that I'm not a fan of political correctness enforcement and I can be very politically incorrect when I'm with friends. There is, however, an enormous difference in the way we act when we're with our friends and the way we act around the general population. Not just because we know them well but becayse the reverse is also true. Nonethless, there are limits beyond where we will not go, even with our friends. The point here is that Gottlieb was not having a conversation with his friends, he was making a statement for all to hear. If he doesn't know the difference the he is not as smart as he thinks he is. If Jimmy the Greek had made his statements when he was just hanging with his friends, his television carreer would have been much longer thsn it was.
