Gonzalo , will you be able to get to some of the games that SJU will play in Spain this summer

The Gonzalo Factor. Would it have the opposite affect in Spain? Perhaps we should keep him away from the team while they are in Spain? Serious dilemma...

Na somebody should put in a good word with Steve Lavin and see if he can find a seat on the bench for Gonzalo.

Thanks for your comments.

I know that St. John´s will be in Barcelona in August, but I don´t know the exact dates.

The distance from Bilbao to Barcelona is 375 miles.

I would like to go. It would be fantastic.

Gonzalo,

Please refresh my memory..... Are you a St.John's alum living in Spain? If not , how did you become a St. John's fan? Thanks

I had the pleasure of discussing this question with Gonzalo over drinks in a bar just off the main square in Bilbao. My recollection is that he is not a St. John's alum but I will defer to the maestro to tell the full story himself.

Fuchsia is right: I am not a St. John´s alum.

How I became fan? It is a little childish.

In 1985, when I was 10, I bought a Spanish basketball magazine. There were some reports about the 1984-85 NCAA Tournament (Elite Eight) in that magazine. I saw the names of the teams: Villanova, Georgetown, St. John´s, Memphis State, North Carolina State, Georgia Tech,...

I wondered who had the most beautiful name. The answer was St. John´s. Then I thought: OK, I will be a St. John´s fan. And since then...

Remember, I was 10.

I am very happy with that decision and I am very proud for being a St. John´s basketball team fan.

Later I knew that Coach Carnesecca have always had a very good relation with Spain, thanks to a former Spanish team Coach, the late Antonio Diaz Miguel.

Gonzalo was a very early member of redmen.com and I think the term "fan" is humble and understated here. Way back in the 90s he was already a stats scientist. How he was able to collect all of these team stats for St. John's while living in Spain, I don't know but admirable.

I had the pleasure of meeting Gonzalo and his mother about three years ago . we shared a drink just before an SJU game at the Garden . He brought us good lick , every game he attended we won .

Gonzalo had shared that story with me on a PM a few years back and my friend Gonzalo, there is nothing childish about it.

I hope you get a chance to see the boys in Spain.

Gonzalo has always been un amuleto de buena suerte [a good luck charm] for St. John's.

Stand by Gonzalo. We are going to need you for the NCAA tournament during the upcoming season.
