Zags always get good foreign kids, assuming Sabonis was not raised in the US.;
@JonRothstein: It's time to start mentioning Gonzaga's Domantas Sabonis among the elite freshmen. Was 4-4 vs St. Joe's for 10 pts + 11 boards in 19 mins.
I always looked at Gonzaga as the school SJU should be most, even more than Villanova and Georgetown.
I think SJU to its own detriment never used its City connection to recruit more kids from overseas. Of course Jamaica Estates is as completely different than Tribeca as one can get. But that doesn't mean the school needs to be Edwin Moses to clear those hurdles. Far from it.
College kids aren't afraid of venturing off on subways. Promote this to overseas kids. Show them how New Yorkers get around. And remind them the campus is place for study, practice, and sleep. The accomodations sure are nicer than some hostel afterall.
Overseas kids, especially the Euro kids seem to have a good feel for the game and have some sound fundamentals, i.e. they can shoot. It is the way they are developed.
Lavin must now procure a large class with an entire new strategy. Personally, if he lands the Italian kids, I would be thrilled. Yes, I joke about approving because they are Italian (ok only partly). But I would be all for a French kid (as long as that French kid didn't think French food, wine, and fashion is better than Italian of course) if he could play.
Time to recruit basketball players. Part of what makes Harrison a favorite is he is a basketball player. Those guys can mask a lot of coaching deficiencies.
Mike Jarvis had a great first two years here because he had a team of high IQ basketball players. Heck they orchestrated the weave and turned it into pure genuis and beautiful basketball.
Time to make SJU truly global. And let th e basketball program be the conduit. It's not as if SJU is recruiting for basketball players against NYU.
