Gold Star families

I think this is something we can perhaps have an open discussion about.

I get that the left looks to pounce at every single opportunity to defame and demean any Trump action or utterance in an attempt to win back votes that went his way last November. That's the nature of politics.

I also believe that when they go too overboard, that a very large segment of the population knows exactly what they are doing and dismisses them even further. Case in point, Hillary's book and excuse tour, continuing to rip Trump at every turn.

The latest politicization of what I believe was a sincere attempt by the President to offer the sincere sympathy and thanks of a nation for a serviceman who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Every kid who ever contemplated walking into a recruitment office for military service contemplates and knows the risk associated with military service. Certainly every man and woman who has volunteered in the last 15 years knows they will likely see a tour of combat duty. Every person who leaves for such a tour knows they may never see their loved ones ever again. Yet, incredibly brave men and women - the very best Americans, sign up for this knowing the risks. Every parent knows this too.

Congresswoman Frederica Wilson decided to take this opportunity to malign Trump for the content of his call, a call that neither Obama nor Bush made at all or with much frequency. It's a courageous call to make IMO, because as John Kelly, White House Chief of Staff, and Gold Star parent himself, said, there is nothing you can say to console a grieving loved one.

Most of us are pretty good at discussing this in a balanced way. I know Trump does not string together the most eloquent verbage, but in this case I also believe his intentions were pure and good, and in no way should he be bashed for this.

" I know Trump does not string together the most eloquent verbage"........

Yet he is also the smartest guy in the room and can beat his SoS in an I.Q. test and his father was rich and who paid Penn to accept him from Fordham so he can now say he went to an Ivy League school, etc.
Mario Cuomo onthe other hand was an eloquent speaker whose father owned a grocery store, who went to St. John's and who became Governor of the greatest state in the Union and who should have been President except for the vowel ending in his name. (Obama doesn't count because his name is Swedish).
:eek:hmy:  I lost my train of thought :eek:hmy: :S
Oh, it is that you don't have to go to an Ivy League school, come from a wealthy family or be a Protestant to become President or Governor of New York. It also shows that Americans are open minded enough to elect a black president twice and a candidate who is disabled like Franklin D. Roosevelt. That empathy in Americans has lead to the election of likely the most disabled President in American history who suffers foot-in-mouth disease coupled with trigger-finger twitter syndrome.
God bless America!

Thanks Beast. This whole scenario is upsetting. My quick thoughts:

I believe Trump's intentions were to express genuine condolences in a respectful way. We know he does not excel at this type of thing, but I believe he did the best job he could. I give him credit for making this unthinkable phone call and, in my opinion, it should not be mocked nor politicized.

What Congresswomen Frederica Wilson (total nut job) has done here is a disgrace. I believe she wanted to take exception to the call and it is SHE who began the shameless attempts to politicize this very personal, heart wrenching event.

Now, that said, Trump has a history of disrespecting Gold Star families (i.e. Khizr Khan) and POWs (i.e. John McCain). So, far be it from him or his people to feign righteousness on this topic.

Regardless, let me end with my regret that the memory of this fallen soldier has been dominated by classless politics and an overzealous press. I do acknowledge that this was created by Wilson and accentuated by left leaning press.

P.S......General Kelly's remarks yesterday were incredibly moving.

Similar thoughts to mine but better articulated then I could.

I believe that President Trump had good intentions when he made the call to Sgt. Johnson's widow. I also believe that Congresswoman Wilson used his words to promote her own agenda. I also wish that Trump had taken the time to think about his response to Wilson before tweeting that she is a liar. If he had said, "It is hard to console someone who has just lost a husband and maybe I could have said it better. However, I have nothing but respect for Sgt. Johnson and all those who have lost their lives while serving our great country, my condolences to his family". This simple statement would have ended it. By firing back, he gave this unfortunate situation more life.

Thanks for a really balanced position on this. Well written too.

Khizr Khan, while a Gold Star parent, also had business ties to Clinton, and was used in the same way the VietCong would use old women - by strapping bombs to them knowing American troops would have a hard time attacking them.

Khan went on a ruthless attack of Trump while hiding behind the mantel of Gold Star parent. I think it was despicable on Clinton's part to use a Gold Star parent in that manner, no less one she had business ties to, and a vested interest in supporting her.

The McCain affair was just another in the ridiculous chapter of Trump insulting his way to the nomination. It was the craziest road to the nomination ever, and instead of laughing off his middle school "rankouts", he rattled nearly all of his rivals. Jeb Bush lost composure when Trump attacked GW, Rubio went the other way in out ranking Trump, Cruz lost his cool, and McCain still hasn't forgotten. There are about a dozen of those candidates I would have preferred as President.

General Kelly, who I understand really did not want this job, but is a man of service and integrity, commanded the room with poignant honesty. He is such a compelling speaker, with a huge presence, and singularly seems to be capable of controlling the jackals in the press corps the way Sigfried and Roy kept the tigers at bay - of course until one day turning his back....

Panther - I enjoy your posts a lot. You correctly point out that America should be in deep sorrow over losing four of our best in an ambush, and prayerfully grateful for their courageous service. Nothing else in this affair really matters beyond that.

When I heard it I thought to myself that I've thought the same thing on more than a few occassions. But I'm not dumb enough to say it out loud, much less to someone who is facing the pain that this woman was facing. To lack the empathy, class and intellectual capacity to understand that this was neither the time nor the place to say something so incredibly heartless and unnecessary was for me further indication of why he is not just in a position he has no place being in but also an incredibly vile person in general. That said making more of it than the predictable word vomit from this imbecile and talking about it rather than the many real disasters he's either ignoring or creating is a waste of time, IMHO.

I think nearly every serviceman would say the same thing - I signed up knowing the risks. Like all things, it's not what you say but how you say it, and you can express the same sentiment and build it into a more eloquent recital of the selfless bravery that all marines know - that this is what I signed up for. This cowgirl caricature of a congresswoman should be ashamed, but it's clear she has no shame. To use the empathy buzzwords that liberal creeps have been tossing around the last 24 hours is completely misplaced - he cared enough to call, and the congresswoman chose to use this for fodder to call for his impeachment. She's a moron

honestly I can't argue with any of Jfan's post but this is why while he might lean left I always think he is giving me his honest opinion and not some bullshit and I have the utmost respect for him
